Wolverhampton Wanderers Face Injury Setbacks for Trippier and Mosquera

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been dealt an early-season blow with confirmation that Kieran Trippier suffered a knee ligament injury on his league debut for the club.

The 35-year-old right-back damaged the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee during Friday’s 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers. Signed on a free transfer in June and brought in for his experience and delivery from wide areas, Trippier is now expected to be out “for a number of weeks”.

It is a brutal setback just as he was beginning his Wolves chapter.

Defensive Issues

Defensive problems did not end there. Yerson Mosquera also faces time out after picking up an injury in the same match against Blackburn. The 25-year-old has sustained a slight tear in his ankle ligaments and is expected to miss several weeks of action, leaving Wolves light in key areas at the back.

Positive News

There was at least a flicker of positivity elsewhere in the treatment room.

Wolves’ director of performance, Phil Hayward, delivered encouraging news on winger Rafiki Said, who had endured a nightmare start to life at the club. The 26-year-old summer signing suffered a high-grade MCL injury during a pre-season friendly against Maidenhead United last month, just 11 days after arriving.

“Rafiki's been working very hard in the gym for the last few weeks with his brace on. He's now out of the brace and the most recent scan looks great, so he's heading, certainly, in the right direction,” Hayward said, outlining a much brighter outlook for the wide man.

Hayward also confirmed that goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is around a week away from full fitness, offering a timely boost in goal, while Haiti international midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is expected to be another couple of weeks from returning to first-team training.

Injuries have hit early, and they have hit important players. How Wolves navigate this stretch could shape the tone of their season.
