3) How we use cookies (overview)
Some cookies and similar technologies we use (such as analytics, affiliate measurement, or social media embeds) may be considered tracking technologies under certain privacy laws (including Québec’s Law 25). Where required, we will clearly disclose their use and obtain your consent before they are activated
We use:
- Essential/Security cookies to operate the Site, provide core features, and protect against abuse.
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics 4) to understand aggregated usage and improve content.
- Affiliate technologies to attribute commissions when you click certain outbound links and make a qualifying purchase.
- Social media embeds (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) that may set cookies when you view or interact with embedded posts.
We do not serve programmatic advertising or Google AdSense at this time.
4) Consent & our banner
- A cookie banner is currently shown to visitors in Canada. Your consent choice is stored for 12 months (unless you clear your cookies earlier).
- Outside Canada, you can manage non-essential cookies any time via Cookie Settings (see Section 7).
- Where local law requires consent before setting non-essential cookies (e.g., in some regions), we will not set them until you provide consent via our controls or an equivalent interface.
5) Types of cookies we use
A. Essential & Security (always active)
Purpose: run the Site; load pages; protect against bots and abuse; maintain availability and performance.
Examples: session identifiers; load-balancing; security tokens; CDN cookies (e.g., Cloudflare).
Typical duration: session up to 12 months depending on the cookie.
Notes: Without these cookies, the Site may not function properly.
B. Analytics (Google Analytics 4)
Google Analytics is provided by Google LLC, which acts as a service provider processing data on our behalf under contractual safeguards
Purpose: measure traffic and engagement to improve our journalism and features.
Practices: GA4 uses event-based measurement and may set first-party cookies/IDs; IP anonymization is enabled.
Retention: event-level data retained for up to 14 months in our GA4 settings.
Controls: see Section 7 for opting out/withdrawing consent.
C. Affiliate measurement
Purpose: when you click an affiliate link from our Site to a partner, they may set a cookie or use similar tech to attribute commissions (e.g., when you make a purchase).
Networks: various affiliate partners/networks (to be specified as our partnerships are finalized).
Duration: typically from 24 hours to 12 months, depending on partner policies.
Notes: No display ads or AdSense are used.
D. Social media embeds (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
Purpose: display embedded posts or media; measure engagement; prevent abuse.
Behavior: these platforms may set cookies when an embed loads or when you interact (e.g., like, share, follow).
Controls: you can block third-party cookies in your browser or load embeds only after consent where required.
Duration: varies by platform; may include session and longer-lived identifiers.
6) Cookies change over time
Cookie names, vendors, and lifetimes may change as we improve the Site. We will update this Policy when our cookie practices materially change. The Cookie Settings panel (Section 7) reflects the current categories we use.
7) Your choices: manage, withdraw, and block
- Cookie Settings: You can review or change your consent for non-essential cookies at any time via the Cookie Settings link in our footer.
- Browser controls: Most browsers let you block or delete cookies. Blocking all cookies may affect Site functionality.
- Global Privacy Control (GPC): If your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to limit non-essential tracking to the extent required or appropriate.
- Do Not Track (DNT): While there is no uniform DNT standard, we make best-effort to respect applicable privacy preferences.
- Third-party settings: For social platforms, adjust your privacy settings directly on X/Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
