Parma Clinches 1–0 Victory Over Udinese in Serie A

Under a grey Udine sky at the Bluenergy Stadium – Stadio Friuli, Parma ground out a clinical 1–0 away win over Udinese that nudges them closer to mid-table safety and checks the home side’s late push towards the European places. In a tight Serie A contest with modest attacking returns but high stakes in the congested middle of the table, a single second-half strike from substitute Nesta Elphege proved decisive.

Kosta Runjaic set Udinese up in a 3-4-1-2, with Nicolò Zaniolo operating between the lines behind Jürgen Ekkelenkamp and Arthur Atta. Carlos Cuesta mirrored the back-three structure in a 3-5-2, asking Gabriel Strefezza and Mateo Pellegrino to stretch Udinese’s back line while Adrián Bernabé and Mandela Keita tried to control the central corridor.

The first half, which ended goalless, reflected Udinese’s territorial control more than true incision. With 57% of the ball overall, the hosts circulated possession confidently, using wing-backs Kingsley Ehizibue and Hassane Kamara to pin Parma’s wide midfielders back. Yet despite racking up corners and shots from the edge of the box, Udinese struggled to generate clear chances inside the area against a well-organised visiting back three of Alessandro Circati, Mariano Troilo and Abdoulaye Ndiaye. Parma, for their part, threatened sporadically on transition but failed to test Maduka Okoye before the interval.

Cuesta acted first after the restart. In the 46th minute, he made a bold attacking change, with Nesta Elphege replacing Pellegrino up front. The switch added pace and direct running to Parma’s forward line – and within five minutes it transformed the game.

In the 51st minute, Parma scored with their only shot on target of the afternoon. Strefezza, drifting cleverly from his starting position, found space to slide a pass into the channel. Elphege timed his run perfectly, breaking beyond the Udinese defence and finishing calmly to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. It was a textbook example of impact from the bench: the substitute exploiting a high defensive line that had rarely been tested in behind before the interval.

Chasing the game, Runjaic turned to his own bench just past the hour. In the 64th minute, Idrissa Gueye replaced Jakub Piotrowski, adding more verticality to the midfield, while Juan Arizala came on for Kamara to inject fresh energy on the flank. Udinese pushed higher, committing more bodies forward and pinning Parma deep, but still struggled to turn pressure into high-quality chances.

Cuesta responded on 66 minutes with a double change to stabilise the midfield and refresh the attack. Christian Ordoñez replaced Bernabé, while Jacob Ondrejka came on for Strefezza, the latter having already supplied the decisive assist. Parma’s shape remained a 3-5-2, but with more legs to defend the wide areas and chase long clearances.

Frustration began to creep into Udinese’s play. On 70 minutes Zaniolo was booked for tripping, emblematic of a home side increasingly impatient against Parma’s compact block. Two further Udinese substitutions followed in the 73rd minute: Oier Zarraga replaced Ehizibue, shifting the hosts towards an even more midfield-heavy setup, and Adam Buksa came on for Ekkelenkamp to offer a more traditional penalty-box presence alongside Atta.

Parma continued to manage the game with a series of defensive-minded changes. In the 72nd minute, Nahuel Estévez replaced Hans Nicolussi Caviglia to add bite and experience in central midfield. Three minutes later, Sascha Britschgi came on for Ndiaye, reinforcing the back line and signalling Cuesta’s intent to protect the lead. Udinese’s final roll of the dice came on 81 minutes, when Branimir Mlacić replaced Thomas Kristensen to freshen up the defensive unit while allowing the wing-backs to push even higher. The last notable incident was another yellow card for Udinese: Jesper Karlstrom went into the book on 84 minutes, underlining the home side’s growing desperation.

Statistically, the pattern of the match was clear. Udinese out-shot Parma 16–10 and produced 10 efforts from inside the box, but only three of those were on target, all saved by Zion Suzuki. Parma managed just one shot on target – Elphege’s winner – and Okoye finished without a save. The underlying numbers underline how fine the margins were: Udinese’s xG of 1.13 was narrowly shaded by Parma’s 1.23, reflecting the visitors’ superior shot quality despite their limited volume. Both teams registered four blocked shots, evidence of committed defending at both ends.

In possession, Udinese completed 386 of 441 passes at an impressive 88%, but too much of that circulation was in front of Parma’s block. Parma, with 291 accurate passes from 349 (83%), were more direct, using their midfield to spring quick attacks rather than dominate the ball.

The result has tangible implications in the mid-table picture. Udinese, who started the day 11th on 43 points with a goal record of 38 scored and 42 conceded, remain on 43 but now with 38 for and 43 against after this 0–1 defeat. Parma, 13th at kick-off with 39 points and a 24–40 record from 33 games, climb to 42 points from 34 matches, improving their goals to 25 scored and 40 conceded. The win strengthens Parma’s grip on mid-table security and keeps them at a safe distance from the relegation battle, while Udinese’s hopes of forcing their way into the late-season conversation for European spots suffer a significant setback.
