Chelsea Confirms Enzo Fernández Will Stay Despite Manchester City Interest

Chelsea shut down talk of an Enzo Fernández exit on Thursday, with Xabi Alonso making it clear the midfielder remains central to his plans despite Manchester City circling.

The Premier League champions have been strongly linked with the 25-year-old Argentina international, but a key date has already passed. Chelsea set a 14 August deadline for any formal approach, and no bid arrived. After that, the message to Fernández’s camp was blunt: he is not for sale this summer.

Speaking before Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso backed both the player and the club’s stance.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” the head coach said, underlining that preparations for the new season include the World Cup winner at the heart of midfield.

Alonso has been encouraged by what he has seen since Fernández returned to the squad.

“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well. I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want,” he added, pointing to a player who, at least internally, is behaving like a man staying put.

City’s admiration has not gone away as they look to reinforce their midfield options, but Chelsea’s stance is firm: Fernández stays at Stamford Bridge.

The club have backed that position with actions as well as words. Pre-season brought a mixed reaction from sections of the Chelsea support, yet the armband went to Fernández in the friendly win over Real Sociedad, a clear show of faith in his leadership and status within the squad.

The transfer window closes on 1 September, so the noise around his future is unlikely to disappear overnight. For now, though, Alonso is planning for a season with Enzo Fernández in blue, not in sky blue.
