Leao's Future in Limbo: Amorim's Warning on Wing Battle

Rafael Leao spent the end of last season talking about a new adventure. New country, new league, new stage. England or Spain were at the top of his list.

Two weeks from the end of the transfer window, that dream is drifting. No firm bids, no real negotiations, no decisive move from abroad. For now, all roads still lead back to San Siro.

His absence from the latest pre-season outing has only deepened the mystery.

A four-goal show, and one notable absentee

In Wroclaw, Ruben Amorim watched his side tear into his former club United with a ruthless edge. Four goals, four different scorers: Samuel Chukwueze, Alphadjo Cisse, Goncalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all found the net in a confident display.

Leao was nowhere to be seen.

The 27-year-old reported a muscle twinge before kick-off and sat the game out, leaving Amorim to play down the alarm while admitting there is still uncertainty.

“I don't think it's a serious thing, but I don't know if he'll be ready,” the Portuguese coach said, as quoted by TMW.

So the winger stays in limbo: not injured enough to spark panic, not fit enough to feature, and not wanted strongly enough elsewhere to trigger a transfer.

“He has to fight”: Amorim lays down the challenge

If Leao imagined that a lack of transfer movement would automatically secure his place, Amorim’s words cut through that assumption.

Pressed on where the winger stands in the pecking order, the coach was blunt: “I don't know, but Leao is one of our players. I've already said that we're happy to have him, he's a valuable player. So we'll see, but he has to fight.”

The pressure finally told in Wroclaw, and not from Leao.

Cisse seized his chance with a vibrant performance and a goal, forcing his way into the conversation. “I think Cisse, with the way that he played, will make things difficult,” Amorim admitted.

The competition does not stop there. Alexis Saelemaekers has reinvented himself in a new role. Christian Pulisic is on his way back. Chukwueze has already underlined his threat.

“We also have [Christian] Pulisic coming back, so we will have a lot of players who will be fighting for that place,” Amorim said.

So the picture is clear. Leao may not get his move, and staying will not guarantee comfort. If the market stays silent, the real battle for his future starts on the training pitch.
