Guglielmo Vicario Joins Juventus from Tottenham

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is heading back to Italy, with Juventus winning the race for his signature after Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go” seal on the deal.

The agreement ends a turbulent spell in north London for the 29-year-old, who never truly convinced as Spurs flirted with disaster last season and only escaped relegation by two points on the final day. His campaign effectively ended in March when he underwent hernia surgery, opening the door for Antonin Kinsky to step in and stake his claim.

For Juventus, this is a sharp change of course. The Bianconeri had pushed hard to prise Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, but when that pursuit collapsed they turned decisively towards Vicario. Once they did, the move accelerated quickly.

Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio detailed how Juventus “stepped up their game” once they switched targets, describing negotiations with Tottenham as moving at “a rapid pace” as both clubs drove towards a final agreement. The structure was clear: a loan with an option to buy, not an obligation. That suits Juventus financially and gives Spurs a clean way to satisfy the player’s desire to return to Serie A.

The intensity of the talks showed on the ground. Vicario’s agent travelled to Turin initially to work on a deal for Jhon Lucumí, then used his time in the city to push Vicario’s move forward, sitting down directly with Juventus executives as the transfer edged towards completion.

The pressure finally told. On Thursday, Romano announced that Juventus had struck a deal with Tottenham, confirming that Spurs had accepted a loan proposal with a buy option clause that is not mandatory. He added that Vicario “wanted the move” and would leave Tottenham immediately, calling him “new goalkeeper for Juventus.”

David Ornstein of The Athletic backed up that version of events, reporting that Tottenham had accepted Juventus’ bid — a loan with an option to buy next summer — and that all parties now expect the signing of the Italy international to go through after Juventus walked away from Martinez.

So Vicario gets his reset, Juventus get their new No. 1 candidate on their terms, and Tottenham, having already begun to move on without him, now commit fully to life after a short, uneasy experiment between the posts.
