Mourinho’s First La Liga Lineup at Real Madrid: Key Midfield Decisions

José Mourinho’s first La Liga lineup as Real Madrid coach is already taking shape, and the heart of it lies in a bold call at the base of midfield.

According to MARCA, relayed by Madrid Xtra, Bernardo Silva and Federico Valverde are expected to start as the double pivot in Madrid’s 2026-27 league opener against Espanyol, edging out Aurelien Tchouameni for the two deeper roles.

Mourinho’s new engine room

From day one, Mourinho’s midfield has been the great tactical talking point of his second coming in Madrid. The double pivot is the hinge of his entire project, and three elite players are fighting for two spots: Bernardo, Valverde and Tchouameni.

For the first game, the equation looks simpler.

Bernardo Silva is set to anchor the structure as the main playmaker from deep. Instead of floating between the lines, he will drop closer to the centre-backs, dictate tempo, and connect Madrid’s buildup with the front line. The Portuguese star is being handed responsibility, not just a role.

The real argument has been over who stands next to him.

On paper, Tchouameni is the classic Mourinho holding midfielder. He reads danger, screens the defence, and keeps his position. In a two-man midfield, those traits usually make you the first name on the teamsheet.

Valverde offers something very different. As Real Madrid’s first captain, he carries authority in the dressing room and on the pitch. He covers ground relentlessly, presses high, and drives the team forward with long, surging runs. He’s less of a pure “6” and more of a box-to-box force.

That contrast set up what many expected to be Mourinho’s first major selection battle.

Valverde gets the nod

For Espanyol, that battle looks temporarily settled. Valverde is set to start alongside Bernardo, with the captain’s energy and leadership preferred from the opening whistle.

Tchouameni’s situation has helped shape that decision. The French midfielder has not played a single minute in pre-season because of muscular discomfort, leaving him short of rhythm and sharpness compared to his rivals. Even if he is medically cleared in time, his lack of game time points towards a place on the bench rather than the starting XI.

The pressure has opened a door, and Valverde has stepped through it.

Mourinho’s choice for the opener does not lock in his long-term blueprint. Once Tchouameni is fully fit, the fight for those two positions will resume, and every performance will matter. For now, though, the first iteration of Madrid’s new spine is clear: Bernardo Silva pulling the strings, Federico Valverde driving the machine.

Espanyol will be the first to test it. The rest of La Liga will be watching what this double pivot says about the Mourinho era to come.
