Barcelona sells Tommy Marques to Braga for €10m
Barcelona have decided to draw a line under Tommy Marques’ time at the club, with Portuguese side Braga striking a deal worth up to €12 million for the 19-year-old midfielder.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already stamped the move with his trademark “Here we go”, signalling that the agreement between the clubs is fully in place and only the final formalities remain.
A €10m call on a rising prospect
Braga will pay €10 million up front for Marques, with a further €2 million tied to achievable add-ons. For a player who was still officially part of Barcelona’s reserve setup, it is a sizeable fee – and a clear statement from Braga about the role they see for him.
Marques had drawn interest from two German clubs, who tracked his situation as his minutes with the first team began to dry up. He listened, weighed up his options, and still chose to return to Portugal, backing Braga as the right stage for his next step.
Barcelona, for their part, have accepted that this is not just a loan to buy time. This is a clean, permanent exit.
From Flick’s orbit to the exit door
Last season, Marques hovered on the edge of Hansi Flick’s squad. Registered with the reserves but often training and travelling with the seniors, he looked like one of the academy names most likely to make the jump.
He got his first taste of it at 18. Six minutes in a 3-0 win over Mallorca at Camp Nou on February 7, then another short cameo against Alaves. Brief appearances, but important ones for a teenager trying to break through in one of the most competitive midfields in Europe.
As the summer began, his path seemed to be opening up. The expected departure of Marc Casado appeared to clear one obstacle. A stronger role in the senior squad felt within reach.
Then the club changed the equation.
Rodri’s arrival closes the door
Barcelona’s decision to push ahead for Manchester City midfielder Rodri transformed the landscape in the middle of the pitch. With one of the game’s elite holding midfielders now set to arrive, the battle for minutes has sharpened again.
For Marques, the message was clear. With Rodri stepping into the heart of the side, the chances of carving out a regular role shrank dramatically. What had looked like a season of gradual integration suddenly threatened to become a year of waiting and watching.
Pre-season underlined it. Marques featured for just 28 minutes, all of them in Barcelona’s second match of the Udine triangular tournament, a 1-0 defeat to Udinese. No extended run, no real audition. Just enough time to confirm the direction of travel.
The reduced involvement only strengthened the sense that a move was coming. Barcelona needed clarity in their squad planning. Marques needed a platform.
Both now have their answer.
A decisive break for club and player
Barcelona walk away with a solid fee for a player who, despite his promise, no longer had a clear route into a packed midfield. Braga land a 19-year-old with first-team experience at one of Europe’s giants and the hunger of someone who has just seen a door close at the highest level.
For Tommy Marques, the question shifts from whether he can break into Barcelona’s XI to how quickly he can become a key figure in Braga’s.
