Craig Bellamy Out of Running for Burnley Job
Craig Bellamy will not be the man to lead Burnley back to the Premier League. What had looked like a realistic route back to Turf Moor for the Wales manager has, according to reports, fallen away.
Bellamy, who has been clear he would not swap the Wales job for Celtic, had appeared more receptive to the idea of taking charge of the recently relegated Clarets. His history with the club, his connection with the squad, and his familiarity with the infrastructure all made the prospect feel natural.
That door has now closed.
Sky Sports News report that Burnley have moved on, shifting their focus to other candidates. Steve Cooper is among those in the frame, as is Rob Edwards, who was recently dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers and is back on the market.
Bellamy knows Burnley well. He worked as Vincent Kompany’s assistant at Turf Moor, part of the staff that guided the club back to the Premier League before Kompany departed for Bayern Munich. For a time, Bellamy looked a logical successor: trusted by the players, steeped in the club’s recent evolution, and already embedded in its methods.
Instead, Burnley are casting the net wider.
The choice they make next will be critical. Since the 2021/22 season, Burnley have bounced between the Premier League and the Championship, never quite able to plant both feet firmly in the top flight. The next manager will be hired with one clear brief: stop the yo-yo.
With Bellamy out of the picture and Kompany gone to Germany, the club stands at a junction. Cooper, Edwards or another candidate entirely — whoever walks through the door will inherit a club desperate to turn short bursts of promotion into something more permanent.
