Manchester United Cool Interest in Lewis Hall Transfer
Manchester United have stepped back from a move for Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, cooling one of the window’s most intriguing late stories.
United back away from Hall deal
Hall, 21, has quickly grown into one of the most coveted young left-backs in the Premier League since swapping Chelsea for Newcastle, initially on loan, before making the move permanent in 2024 in search of regular minutes.
Comfortable at left-back and in midfield, he has become a key part of Newcastle’s rise over the last three seasons, his versatility and composure helping drive the club to last year’s historic Carabao Cup triumph. That surge in form continued into last season, which made his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup a genuine talking point.
Tuchel may have looked elsewhere, but the Premier League’s elite did not. Manchester United have monitored Hall closely for some time, identifying him as their leading left-back target this summer. Reports suggested the player himself would be open to the move, with the prospect of leaving St James’ Park for Old Trafford very much on his radar.
The departure of Eddie Howe, who shares an agent with Hall, only added fuel to the speculation that a deal could be forced through.
Newcastle dig in over ‘untouchable’ defender
Newcastle’s stance never wavered. Inside the club, Hall is regarded as one of the squad’s “untouchables”, a core piece of their project in the north east. Only an astronomical offer was ever likely to move the dial.
That price point has effectively ended United’s pursuit. According to The Athletic, the Old Trafford hierarchy are wary of committing major funds so close to Tuesday’s deadline and are, for now, ruling out paying the kind of fee it would take to tempt Newcastle into selling.
A loan solution has therefore come into sharper focus. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has emerged as a potential short-term fix until next summer, with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas also mentioned as alternative options to provide cover and competition for Luke Shaw.
Hall, meanwhile, remains tied down. He still has three years left on his Newcastle contract.
Carrick reshapes United squad
United have already been busy. Michael Carrick has reinforced his midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, while veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow has come in as back-up to Senne Lammens on a free transfer.
The rebuild is not stopping there. United have agreed a £70 million deal with Brighton for midfielder Carlos Baleba, who has been granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
The left-back situation, though, remains unresolved – and Hall will not be the answer.
Jaissle’s blunt message: ‘No chance’
Any lingering hope at Old Trafford took a public hit after Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. On Viaplay, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel put new Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle on the spot, telling him: “We’re after your left-back!”
Jaissle didn’t flinch.
No chance! No chance!
came the emphatic reply, underlining the club’s refusal to entertain offers for Hall.
Speaking separately to Sky Sports, Jaissle admitted Newcastle are still working on late-window tweaks, but insisted those would be carefully judged.
“I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it’s depending also if players are leaving as well,” he said. “For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned.
“We will use the remaining time in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here.”
So Hall stays, Newcastle hold their line, and United turn to Plan B. With the clock ticking towards deadline day, the question now is simple: can they find the right stopgap at left-back without blowing next summer’s budget?
