Arsenal Intensifies Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes
Arsenal’s first move for Bruno Guimaraes has been swatted away, but the Premier League champions are not walking away from the table just yet.
The London club have stepped up a long-standing pursuit of the Newcastle United midfielder, sounding out both the player’s camp and the hierarchy at St James’ Park over the past 24 hours. The message back was firm. The door is shut at £55m.
Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve
Interest in Guimaraes has simmered for months. Newcastle’s failure to secure European football has only intensified speculation around several of their key players, and Arsenal, hunting a new central midfielder and a left-sided attacker this summer, have moved from admiration to action.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Mikel Arteta’s side initially made what he described as an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ representatives, mirroring a similar feeler previously put out by Manchester United. At that stage, there had been no direct contact with Newcastle, and the club’s stance was clear: they did not wish to sell.
That changed quickly.
Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that Arsenal followed up with a concrete approach to Newcastle as well as the player’s side. The champions explored a deal in the region of £55m, testing whether Financial Fair Play pressure or the absence of European revenue might soften Newcastle’s position.
It did not.
Romano reported that Newcastle “closed the doors” on that proposal, making it plain that Guimaraes will not be leaving for that figure. The Brazilian, for his part, is said to be leaving the situation entirely in Newcastle’s hands and respecting the club’s decision.
Brazilian outlet GeGlobo went further, stating that a £55m offer from Arsenal has been “rejected” but stressing that the Gunners intend to return with an improved bid. The opening shot has missed, yet the pursuit is very much alive.
Mikel Arteta’s midfield rebuild gathers pace
The interest in Guimaraes underlines Arsenal’s intention to add a high-calibre controller to Arteta’s midfield. The Brazilian’s blend of bite, range of passing and composure under pressure fits the profile of a player who could anchor Arsenal’s next phase under their Spanish coach.
Newcastle, though, know exactly what they have. Guimaraes remains central to their project, and without a fee that matches their valuation, they are prepared to stand firm. Arsenal now face a decision: walk away or escalate.
The sense from those close to the deal is that this saga has a few more turns to take.
Arsenal move for Leicester starlet Jeremy Monga
While the Guimaraes chase dominates headlines, Arsenal are working another track entirely at the opposite end of the age spectrum.
Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as a key target, and Arsenal have already seen an opening offer knocked back. The first bid, described as “cheeky”, failed to tempt Leicester, but it did start the conversation.
According to Football Insider, talks between the two clubs are ongoing as they look to agree a fee and avoid the uncertainty of a tribunal. Crucially for Arsenal, Monga is understood to be willing to make the move to the champions, a stance that strengthens their position as negotiations continue.
Arsenal are described as “confident of finalising a deal” for the highly rated starlet this summer. Where Newcastle have drawn a hard line over Guimaraes, Leicester appear more open to a compromise over Monga, provided the structure and value of the deal are right.
Two very different pursuits. One for a proven Premier League enforcer in his prime, another for a teenager at the start of his journey. Both speak to the same thing: a champion side refusing to stand still, and a transfer window that is only just starting to catch fire.
