Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Serious Pool Incident

Yael Trepy, the young French forward on Cagliari’s books, is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool, the Serie A club has confirmed.

The 20-year-old is being treated in hospital in northern Sardinia, with Italian reports saying he was rescued on Sunday in Porto Cervo after swallowing a large quantity of water. Doctors have placed him in a medically induced coma, according to those same reports.

Cagliari released a brief, sober statement, confirming Trepy “is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari” and stressing that the club is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”. The Sardinian side also appealed for calm around the situation, asking that “privacy be respected” and promising to provide updates “as soon as possible”.

Details of how the incident unfolded have not been disclosed by the club.

The news comes just days after Trepy’s latest appearance for the first team. He started Cagliari’s Coppa Italia tie against Arezzo on Friday, playing 54 minutes in a 1-0 win.

Trepy joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based Union Sportive Creteil and broke into the senior side last season, scoring once in eight Serie A outings. A promising attacker at the start of his top-flight career, he now faces a very different fight, with his club and family waiting anxiously for the next medical bulletin.
