Vincenzo Montella Predicts Kenan Yildiz’s Rise Amid Injury Setbacks for Turkey

Turkey's head coach Vincenzo Montella shared his thoughts on the absence of key players Hakan Calhanoglu and Kenan Yildiz ahead of their upcoming Nations League matches. Both stars are sidelined, alongside defender Mert Muldur, which presents a significant challenge for the squad.

Montella explained that missing these experienced leaders means younger players must step up sooner than expected. "Without Calhanoglu and Yildiz, it's not the same Turkey," he said. "At first, Muldur will be out too. This will test our new players, especially with four tough matches coming up."

High Praise for Juventus Talent Kenan Yildiz

Despite Yildiz’s injury, Montella spoke highly of the 21-year-old Juventus forward, comparing his style to Italian great Alessandro Del Piero. The coach highlighted Yildiz’s technical skills and adaptability, saying he expects the youngster to soon rank among football’s best.

"Kenan Yildiz will become one of the world’s top players," Montella declared. "Even when Ale started, there were comparisons to Baggio. He has the talent and the potential to be great. Maybe he isn't a classic number 10 yet, but at his age, players evolve. He can play as a number 10 even starting from the wing and cutting inside."

Facing Italy Brings Personal Emotion

Looking ahead to Turkey’s double-header against Italy, Montella admitted the matches carry emotional weight. He faces his home country and former Sampdoria teammate Roberto Mancini, whom he praised as the right man to lead Italy’s national team resurgence.

"I would have liked to face all teams, but not Italy, especially twice in a few days. It will be emotional," Montella said. "I played with Mancini at Sampdoria; there's respect and affection. I believe in him — he has the experience and knowledge to bring Italy back to the top. He's the right person."

Turkey Prepares for Tough Group A1 Battles

Turkey opens their Nations League Group A1 campaign against France before facing Italy in quick succession. Montella emphasized the need for tactical focus despite the absences.

  • Turkey vs Italy: 28 Sept 2026, 21:45

Montella remarked, "France has unmatched quality and depth, revitalized under Zidane, but it won’t be easy for them either. As for our two games against Italy, I hope they will be very balanced."
