Xabi Alonso Confirms Injury Updates Ahead of Chelsea vs Luton

Xabi Alonso will be without Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town on Wednesday, with the head coach confirming the midfield pair are sidelined.

“Both not for tomorrow,” Alonso said, drawing a firm line under any hopes of a late recovery.

Caicedo’s issue is not expected to keep him out for long. The Ecuadorian is targeting a return for the weekend’s league fixture, offering Alonso some relief in a congested early-season schedule. Palestra’s situation is less clear, with the club set to carry out further checks before deciding when he can rejoin the squad.

“Hopefully Moi can make it for the weekend. Maybe we need to check a little bit more with Marco,” Alonso explained.

While injuries bite into his options, Alonso is preparing to lean again on Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine’s name continues to swirl around the transfer market, with Manchester City expected to test Chelsea’s resolve, but Alonso made it clear he sees Fernandez as part of his immediate plans.

“Yes, so we expect that he’s involved, he’s trained, he’s training really well, he’s a good professional and he will be involved,” Alonso said, underlining the midfielder’s attitude amid the noise.

Asked bluntly whether he wants Fernandez to stay at Stamford Bridge, Alonso did not hesitate.

“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities, he has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let’s see how things develop.”

Injury setbacks on one side, transfer speculation on the other. Alonso walks into the Luton tie juggling both, but with a clear message: the focus, for now, stays on the pitch.
