Xabi Alonso Prepares Chelsea for Brentford Clash
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of Friday night’s trip to Brentford, delaying final calls on his starting XI until the morning of the game as key players race the clock on fitness.
Moises Caicedo is edging towards a return, while captain Reece James remains under careful management as he works through his recovery programme. No one, though, has been formally ruled out.
Alonso made it clear he wants every possible hour before committing.
“In terms of injuries, no one is ruled out for Friday so I prefer to be cautious,” he said. “Moises Caicedo is getting closer to fitness. We will see Reece James’ development before deciding.”
Caicedo’s progress has been described as rapid, but Alonso refused to promise the midfielder any minutes until he has seen how he comes through late physical tests. The medical data will speak. Then Alonso will decide.
Out on the flanks and in the forward line, Brazil international Joao Pedro could also feature against Brentford, though there is still uncertainty around his availability with international duty on the horizon. Alonso, though, batted away wider selection noise and speculation about call-ups, making it clear Chelsea’s immediate task takes priority over anything that comes after.
Focus on Brentford
The focus is Brentford. And the warnings from the manager were sharp.
Alonso has drilled his squad on what awaits at the Gtech Community Stadium, stressing that Thomas Frank’s side are far more than just a set-piece machine or a counter-attacking outfit.
“They do set-pieces and fast transitions very well, but they are a complete team with or without the ball,” he said. “They have great strength playing at home, so it is going to be a big challenge.”
To ram the point home, Alonso revealed he had gone back over last season’s meeting, using that footage to underline the threats Chelsea will face and the fine margins that define these fixtures.
He knows the Premier League punishes even a moment’s lapse.
Alonso has demanded total concentration from the first whistle, wary of Brentford’s ability to pounce on any defensive mistake and flip the mood of a game in seconds. One misjudged set-piece. One sloppy turnover. That’s all it takes.
With an international break looming, the stakes sharpen. A win on Friday night would hand Chelsea valuable momentum and a far more comfortable backdrop as players disperse to join their national teams.
Kick-off at Brentford is set for 8:00 pm BST on Friday. For Alonso and Chelsea, the real decisions come a few hours before that, when fitness reports land, boots go on, and the manager finally reveals his hand.
