World Cup 2026 Group Stage: Team Paths to the Round of 32 Knockouts
Understanding 2026 World Cup Group Progression
The second round of group matches at the World Cup is underway, and some countries are on track for the knockout stages while others face early exits. The tournament now features 48 teams, up from 32 in previous editions, changing how teams advance.
Instead of just the top two from each group moving forward, the new format allows the top two from all 12 groups plus the eight best third-place teams to qualify for the Round of 32. With 16 teams eliminated after the group phase, tracking standings and tie-breakers has become more complex.
Group A Overview
Mexico secured their spot by winning against South Korea. South Korea needs at least a draw against South Africa to advance as runners-up. South Africa can still qualify if they beat Mexico and Czechia beats South Korea. Conversely, Czechia must win their next match and hope South Africa loses or draws with Mexico.
Group B Update
Canada and Switzerland both have four points and will face off to decide the group leader. Switzerland needs a win due to Canada's superior goal difference; Canada advances first with a win or draw. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar still harbor slim hopes of advancing, likely as one of the best third-place teams.
Group C Insights
Scotland leads with three points and a game in hand; a victory over Morocco guarantees knockout qualification. Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1, leaving neither team safe or out. Haiti faces elimination if they lose to Brazil and Morocco beats Scotland.
Group D Standings
United States and Australia both start strong with three points each. The group winner will emerge depending on their head-to-head result and outcomes involving Turkey and Paraguay. Paraguay and Turkey risk elimination based on upcoming results.
Other Groups Summary
- Group E: Germany and Ivory Coast lead; either can top the group depending on their next match.
- Group F: Sweden is ahead, but Japan, Netherlands, and Tunisia remain in contention.
- Group G and H: All teams drew their first games; none can yet guarantee progression or elimination.
- Group I: Norway and France won their openers; no team qualifies or is knocked out yet.
- Group J: Argentina and Austria lead, with Jordan and Algeria fighting to avoid elimination.
- Group K: Colombia tops the group; DR Congo and Portugal are tied; Uzbekistan faces possible elimination.
