Calvin Ramsay's Loan to St Mirren: A Goodbye from Liverpool?

Calvin Ramsay’s Liverpool story looks all but written.

With minutes at Anfield drying up and his contract running down to next summer, the decision to send him on loan to St Mirren reads less like a development move and more like a quiet goodbye. Unless something dramatic happens over the next few months, this is the beginning of the end for his time on Merseyside.

For Liverpool to even consider a new deal, the Scot would need a standout season back in Scotland. Not just solid. Outstanding. The kind of campaign that forces people to sit up and take notice. If that happens, the twist might not come from Anfield at all. A successful spell under Craig McLeish could easily tempt Ramsay into making Paisley his long-term home instead.

The scale of his slide down the pecking order has been stark. Even when Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley were sidelined for lengthy spells last season, Arne Slot looked everywhere but Ramsay for a solution at right-back. Midfielders such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were shunted into the role ahead of a specialist in that position. That told its own story.

The picture hasn’t improved. Bradley, the Northern Ireland captain, is still months away from returning, and the Dutchman’s display at Newcastle on Sunday drew heavy criticism. Yet Liverpool still felt comfortable sanctioning Ramsay’s loan, despite Andoni Iraola’s obvious problems on the right side of defence.

Strip it all back and the conclusion is hard to avoid: at 23, Ramsay has probably pulled on a Liverpool shirt for the last time. Four years on from his move from Aberdeen, the promise that once surrounded him at Anfield has never truly taken root.

It hasn’t unfolded the way he imagined. But St Mirren now offers something precious that Liverpool no longer can: a clean slate, a regular starting berth, and the chance to prove he belongs at this level.
