Wales Faces Portugal in Nations League A Opener
Wales head to Lisbon on Thursday, 24 September, walking straight into the fire for their opening Nations League A test against Portugal.
Cristiano Ronaldo waits. So does a stadium that rarely forgives hesitation.
Craig Bellamy’s first major selection headache as head coach is already here. Harry Wilson is out. Nathan Broadhead is out. Karl Darlow is out. All three have withdrawn through injury, stripping experience and attacking spark from a squad that will need every ounce of composure in Lisbon.
There’s another setback. Highly rated young defender Dylan Lawlor is also missing, removing one more option from a back line that will be asked to suffer for long stretches against Portugal’s attacking carousel.
But Bellamy does get one significant boost. Ben Davies is back and available, the captain’s return giving Wales both a voice and a shield at the heart of their defence. His presence alone changes the feel of the back line: organisation, calm, and a left foot that can drag Wales up the pitch when the pressure tightens.
Up front, the picture is far less settled. Two uncapped forwards, Cian Ashford and Joe Taylor, now stand in the spotlight. They are not household names. They are not proven at this level. Yet they offer something Bellamy desperately needs: legs, energy, and the courage to run in behind when most players would simply retreat and defend.
This is the tactical puzzle. Do you pack the midfield and sit deep, trying to suffocate space for Ronaldo and his supporting cast? Or do you trust youth and pace, gamble on turnovers, and hit Portugal on the counter with Ashford or Taylor stretching the game?
If you were Bellamy, how would you set up in Lisbon? What formation would you trust to withstand Ronaldo and company, and which starting XI would you send out to steal a result on Portuguese soil?
