Vinicius Junior, once untouchable on the left, is starting to feel Kylian Mbappe’s shadow grow longer. The numbers from the last three games tell the story more clearly than any debate in the stands.

Mourinho’s choices start to tilt

As reported by Spanish newspaper Marca, Vinicius has been the one to make way in each of Madrid’s last three outings. He left the pitch in the 87th minute against Inter, in the 89th against Rayo Vallecano, and as early as the 68th minute versus Elche. That progression is no coincidence. It reflects a change in Jose Mourinho’s approach compared with the opening weeks of the season.

At the start, Mourinho tried to keep things even. In the first four matches — against Espanyol, Real Sociedad, Malaga and Real Betis — both Mbappe and Vinicius started, and the gap in minutes between them never stretched beyond six. It was a deliberate balance, a shared stage.

Then the equilibrium cracked.

Mbappe has now racked up 630 minutes to Vinicius’ 598. The Frenchman has gone the distance in six matches; the Brazilian has completed only three. It’s a small gap on paper, but on the pitch it feels like a clear hierarchy beginning to form.

Mbappe’s form makes Mourinho’s tilt easier to understand. He has exploded out of the blocks, scoring 8 goals in 7 matches. He looks decisive, ruthless, and every extra minute he gets seems justified.

Vinicius, by contrast, has yet to ignite. One goal, three assists, and a penalty won against Real Betis is not a disastrous return, but it is a step down from the influence he is used to exerting. The sense is not just that Mbappe is rising, but that Vinicius is still chasing his sharpest version.

And he is no longer looking over his shoulder at just one rival.

New competition, new pressure

The fight for places around him has intensified. Brahim Diaz and Espi have both impressed, forcing their way into Mourinho’s thoughts with strong performances. Diomande has now arrived on the scene as well, adding another option and another layer of pressure.

For Mourinho, that depth is a luxury. For Vinicius, it’s a warning. Balancing two superstars was hard enough when the flanks were effectively reserved for them. With fresh, hungry alternatives pushing for minutes, keeping Mbappe and Vinicius on equal footing becomes almost impossible.

Even so, Marca is clear: this is not yet a repeat of last season’s tension between Vinicius and Xabi Alonso, when the Brazilian’s frequent substitutions sparked a genuine conflict. This time, the situation is more controlled. Vinicius still sits at the heart of Mourinho’s plans, even if he is no longer guaranteed to finish every game.

A rivalry with history

This duel between Vinicius and Mbappe is not new. Marca notes that their seasons have often moved in opposite directions, one soaring while the other stalls.

Last season offered the perfect example. Vinicius laboured through the first half of the campaign while Mbappe hit his peak. Then the roles flipped. The Brazilian surged, delivering the kind of form that made him Madrid’s main attacking reference, while Mbappe’s output faded.

Now the pattern seems to be repeating. Mbappe has once again imposed himself early, looking every inch the leader of Madrid’s attack. Vinicius is still trying to find rhythm, confidence, and the explosiveness that once made him undroppable.

And as that search drags on, the balance of minutes, influence and status between the two is quietly, steadily, tilting in the Frenchman’s favour.
