Troy Parrott Shines in Real Betis Victory Over Getafe

Troy Parrott marked his return to the Real Betis starting XI with a lively display on Thursday night, helping Manuel Pellegrini’s side edge past Getafe 1-0 and climb to third in La Liga.

The Ireland striker, back in the team after remaining on the bench for Monday’s 2-1 win at Villarreal, wasted no time announcing himself. Inside five minutes, he almost produced a goal of the season contender.

Pouncing on a loose Getafe pass near halfway, Parrott spotted David Soria off his line and went for audacity. His long-range lob had the goalkeeper scrambling, Soria stretching every inch to claw the ball away with his fingertips. It was inches from brilliance.

Betis took control from there but laboured to turn dominance into goals. Antony twice lashed efforts over the bar, the pressure building without reward as Getafe sat deep and absorbed wave after wave.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 45 minutes, and Parrott was at the heart of it.

Betis worked the ball out from the back, Abde Ezzalzouli driving through midfield before slipping it wide to Antony on the flank. Continuing his run through the middle, Parrott took the return pass on the edge of the box and showed composure, sliding the ball across goal into Abde’s path.

Abde did the rest, drilling low past Soria to give Betis the lead their play deserved. Parrott didn’t get the goal, but the assist underlined his growing influence in green and white.

After the interval, the pattern barely changed. Getafe dropped even deeper, content to defend their box, while Betis hunted the cushion of a second goal that never quite came. Half-chances flickered and faded. Shots were blocked, crosses cut out, moves broke down in crowded spaces.

Pellegrini eventually turned to his bench midway through the second half, withdrawing Parrott, Isco and Abde in search of fresh legs and a different attacking angle. The changes brought energy but not the killer blow.

That left Betis to sweat through a tense finish. Getafe finally emerged from their shell in the closing stages, throwing bodies forward and asking questions of a defence that had been largely untroubled. The hosts bent but did not break, seeing out the final minutes to secure the 1-0 victory.

The win lifts Betis to third place on 15 points, level with Real Madrid but behind on goal difference. Barcelona remain perfect at the top with 18 points from six games.

For Parrott, it was another step in an encouraging start to life in Seville. The Dubliner had already delivered the winner against Real Madrid a fortnight ago, coming off the bench at Estadio La Cartuja to hand José Mourinho’s side their first defeat of the season.

Now he has his first La Liga assist for Betis and a firm grip on a place in Pellegrini’s plans. With Betis pushing at the top end of the table, his next contribution could carry even greater weight.
