Towson Tigers Dominate Bucknell in 3-1 Victory
TOWSON, Md. – Towson needed a spark. It found three of them before halftime.
The Tigers blitzed Bucknell with three first-half goals and rode that early surge to a 3-1 non-league win on Sunday at Tiger Field, handing the Bison their fourth straight defeat.
Towson Strikes Early, Then Doubles Down
The tone changed just after the 14-minute mark. A low drive forced Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah McFarland into action, but when she parried the initial effort, Meron Koro reacted first. With McFarland stranded, Koro calmly rolled the rebound into an empty net to put Towson (2-2-2) in front.
Koro nearly doubled the lead moments later, only to miss by inches. Bucknell never really reset. Towson sensed vulnerability and punished it.
Off the bench came Jayla Caldwell, and the game swung firmly her way. She struck twice in a five-minute burst, both times from corner kicks, to turn a tight contest into a 3-0 cushion by the break.
Her first was textbook: a clean, decisive header that flew past McFarland. The second was more chaotic. Bucknell failed to clear the initial delivery, the ball dropped to Caldwell’s feet, and she lifted a clever lob over McFarland and into the far-side netting. One set-piece routine, two very different finishes, the same ruthless outcome.
Bucknell’s Missed Chance, Then a Response
Bucknell did carve out a golden chance in the opening half. At the 20-minute mark, Gaby Parker sliced between two defenders and broke into the box, only to be denied by Towson goalkeeper Keagan Williams, who closed down the angle and smothered the shot. At 1-0, that moment felt pivotal. Minutes later, Towson’s lead began to swell.
After the interval, Bucknell finally found some rhythm. The Bison pressed higher, played quicker, and outshot Towson 10-9 over the final 45 minutes. They drove into wide areas, especially through the right, where Bella Connell made a sharp run into the area before running out of room at the byline.
The renewed energy was rewarded in the 58th minute from a set piece of their own. Defender Clare Nemsick delivered an inviting ball, and Louisa Thomsen met it with a firm header. The effort smacked off the inside of the left post and bounced just over the line. Thomsen had her first goal of the season; Nemsick her second assist. At 3-1, Bucknell finally had a foothold.
Numbers Tell the Rest
Towson still carried the heavier attacking load overall, finishing with a 21-16 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. McFarland made four saves in the first half before giving way to Reese Dolan, who produced two stops in a shutout second-half shift. At the other end, Williams anchored Towson’s win with five saves.
Bucknell, now 3-5, leaves non-conference play searching for answers but not without signs of life from that second-half push. The Bison head to Villanova on Thursday at 4 p.m., then open Patriot League play at home against Lehigh on Sept. 19.
The question is simple now: can that late spark in Towson survive the step up to league play?
