Tottenham Boosted by Return of Key Players Before Premier League Opener

Tottenham have been handed a timely boost before their Premier League opener at Brentford, with Mateus Fernandes, James Maddison and Destiny Udogie all back in training. One major concern lingers, though: Micky van de Ven is still a serious doubt for the trip across London.

New head coach Roberto De Zerbi has spent much of pre-season juggling fitness issues rather than fine‑tuning his strongest XI. Maddison and Fernandes have had their minutes carefully rationed, while Van de Ven and Udogie did not feature at all in the warm-up games.

Udogie is being handled with particular care after a run of muscular problems last season. Maddison is on a similar programme as he continues to build up after the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered last summer. Both are edging closer. Both want in on Saturday.

Fernandes, a summer signing, is also pushing to be involved after a calf problem disrupted the last few weeks of his preparation. His return to full training adds another option to a midfield De Zerbi is trying to reshape on the fly.

The mood is less optimistic around Van de Ven. The Netherlands defender, fresh from signing a lucrative new contract, was not seen in training at Hotspur Way and did not make a single De Zerbi pre-season squad after coming back from the World Cup. With Brentford looming, his chances of featuring look slim.

Up front, there is another question mark. Dominic Solanke has been used sparingly in pre-season after missing most of last campaign with ankle and hamstring injuries, leaving his involvement uncertain as well.

Spurs head to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening desperate to make an early statement. The club have thrown their weight behind De Zerbi, spending £237million on six new signings in an attempt to rip up the script after last season’s dismal 17th-place finish.

Now comes the real test: can this rebuilt, expensively assembled side hit the ground running without their defensive linchpin?
