Tottenham’s home campaign began with a familiar, unwelcome feeling.
Seven days after a dismal opening to the season, Spurs at least found a higher gear against Newcastle on Saturday. The performance had more bite, more purpose, more of what the home crowd demanded. The result, though, told a story they know too well at this stadium: another defeat.

Newcastle left with a 2-0 win, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa striking in the second half to punish Spurs’ wastefulness. For Omar Marmoush, making his Spurs debut, it was a harsh introduction to life in north London.
Same old story at home
Tottenham went toe-to-toe with Newcastle for long stretches. They moved the ball quicker, pressed with more conviction, and carved out chances that simply had to be taken. They weren’t.
The game stayed tight, level, and there for someone to grab. The visitors did.
The pressure finally told after the break. Elanga broke through to open the scoring, and with Spurs chasing, gaps appeared. Wissa then delivered the decisive second, killing off any lingering hope of a late response and dragging the mood back to last season’s gloom.
New faces, same problems
This was supposed to be the first glimpse of a refreshed Spurs attack, but it never quite materialised. New signing Savio was ruled out before kickoff with what the club described as “muscle fatigue”, denying the hosts one of their most intriguing options.
Without him, and with a “motley” mix of new arrivals and players still working back to full sharpness, the team never fully clicked. There were flashes, combinations that almost came off, but not enough cohesion in the final third to turn pressure into goals.
Marmoush worked, pressed, and showed hints of why Spurs brought him in. He just didn’t get the moment every debutant craves.
A bleak start on paper
Two games, two defeats. No goals scored. Spurs sit at 0-2 in the Premier League, a start that jars with the ambition around the club and underlines how quickly this season could drift if the attack doesn’t sharpen up.
The display against Newcastle was better than the week before. That much is clear. But improvement without points only goes so far. At some stage, and soon, the performances have to turn into wins.
