Thilo Kehrer’s Deadline Day Transfer to Ajax: A New Chapter
Thilo Kehrer barely had time to pack a bag. By the time the transfer window slammed shut, the German defender was already in Amsterdam, holding up an Ajax shirt and trying to process the fastest move of his career.
“That was a first for me. Very exciting, it was different. I’m happy to be here,” he told ESPN on Friday, still sounding like someone catching his breath after Deadline Day.
The whole thing started just 24 hours earlier.
Kehrer first heard of Ajax’s interest the day before he signed. From there, the deal accelerated at full speed. “Everything happened very quickly: talks with Jordi (Cruyff), with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”
One conversation followed another, the green lights kept coming, and suddenly the former AS Monaco defender found himself walking into one of Europe’s most storied clubs.
Ambition at the heart of the move
Kehrer didn’t jump blindly. Behind the rush of Deadline Day, there was a clear calculation. Ajax’s ambition, he says, made the difference.
“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches. That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”
It’s a line that fits both the club and the player. Ajax are rebuilding, but they are never allowed to think small. Kehrer, 27, arrives in his prime, expecting to fight for silverware, not simply minutes.
His first impressions of the club only reinforced that choice.
“The scale, the stadium, the atmosphere and the pure football. The club have their own DNA,” he said, clearly struck by the environment he has stepped into.
A familiar feel in a new city
Ajax might be a new chapter, but it doesn’t feel entirely foreign. Kehrer spent years at Schalke, just across the border, and he knows this part of Europe well. On top of that, a message popped up on his phone almost as soon as the deal went through.
Soon after completing the move, he heard from fellow German Marc-André ter Stegen, currently on loan from FC Barcelona. The goalkeeper didn’t need to sell him much.
“I didn’t need to ask much. I already knew Ajax very well. I played for Schalke, not far from here. Everything was already very clear.”
The dressing room also offers some ready-made connections. Kehrer already knew Caio Henrique and Simon Adringa from Monaco, and that helped strip away some of the usual awkwardness of a first week at a new club.
“It makes it easier when you have familiar faces. They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”
There are other familiar names too. “I know Marc ter Stegen and Julian Brandt from when I played against them in the Bundesliga and from the German national team,” he added, underlining how tight-knit the top level of European football can feel.
Contract signed, future open
Kehrer’s deal in Amsterdam runs until mid-2027. That gives Ajax a solid window to build with him at the heart of their defence, but he isn’t making grand promises about the long term.
“I don’t know yet. We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”
For now, that’s enough. A defender who wanted a club with a clear identity has landed at a place that lives off exactly that. The foundation, as he put it, is there.
What comes next will say as much about Ajax’s new era as it does about Thilo Kehrer’s.
