Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham: A U-Turn After Transfer Frustrations

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder pushed for a move in the summer, frustrated by limited minutes after Roberto De Zerbi arrived towards the end of last season. His situation sparked serious interest across the Premier League. Nottingham Forest tested Spurs with a £38m bid, which was rejected, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled.

For all that noise, his role so far this campaign has been minimal: just 45 minutes of Premier League action.

Yet inside the club, the tone has changed. Bergvall now speaks like a player buying into the project.

"I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract," he said after putting pen to paper. He talked about pushing his own ceiling too. "I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

"Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team - performances, goals and assists - to help as much as I can. I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead."

Those words land differently given what happened at the end of last season. De Zerbi, parachuted into a relegation fight, admitted he mishandled Bergvall during that chaotic run-in as Spurs only just stayed up. In July, he called the Swede “a top, top, top player” but refused to beg him to stay, stressing he would not try to “convince anyone to stay” against their will.

Now the tone from the head coach matches the club’s decision to lock Bergvall down.

Speaking after the renewal was confirmed, De Zerbi said: "I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential."

The contract is signed. The public backing is clear. The next question is whether Tottenham finally give Bergvall the stage his talent demands.
