Gerrard backs Atlético – and enjoys Arsenal’s miss
Not everyone is disappointed.
Speaking about the saga, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard backed Atlético’s refusal to strengthen a direct rival in Spain and in Europe, and he did not hide his relief that Arsenal ended up empty-handed.
“I understand his point of view, but Atlético Madrid don't want to strengthen a rival and be a feeder club to the teams you can compete domestically with and in the Champions League, so you can understand it from a club point of view as well.
“I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!”
Gerrard’s reaction underlines the wider view of Álvarez’s status. He is one of the most coveted forwards in the game, and dropping him into Arsenal’s front line would have made an already serious contender even more dangerous.
