Sunderland step out at the Stadium of Light on Sunday knowing this one already feels important. Matchday two, first home game of the Premier League season, and a chance to steady themselves after a jolt on opening weekend.
They arrive bruised but not broken. The 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road stung, not just because of the scoreline but because of how it unfolded. Nilson Angulo dragged Sunderland level and, for long spells, they carried a real attacking threat. Then came the lapses at the back. Late defensive mistakes turned a promising away performance into a pointless trip.
That setback jarred with what had been an encouraging summer. Wins over Stade Rennais and RC Lens had built confidence and hinted at a side ready to adapt quickly to life back in the top flight. Now they have to prove that form wasn’t a mirage.
Team news: key winger out, new faces in the frame
Regis Le Bris has problems to solve and options to weigh up.
The biggest blow is on the left flank. Simon Adingra, such a key outlet, is out for around six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season. His absence strips Sunderland of pace and direct running on that side, forcing a rethink in the final third.
There is another enforced change. Dayann Methalie, one of the club’s summer recruits, must sit this one out as he serves a one-match suspension carried over from yellow-card accumulation in France last season. His debut will have to wait.
The mood is not entirely downbeat, though. Jules Ahoka is now fully registered after his move from Royal Antwerp and is expected to make the matchday squad. Le Bris is likely to ease him in from the bench, but his presence gives Sunderland fresh depth and a different profile to call on if the game tightens.
At the back, the manager finally has some breathing space. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off the fitness issues that disrupted their pre-season and are back in contention. Both are pushing to line up alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava, giving Le Bris the chance to reinforce a defence that creaked at Ipswich.

With Adingra unavailable and Methalie suspended, Sunderland’s shape should still look familiar, even if the personnel shift slightly.
Predicted XI: Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey.
Angulo, fresh from his goal at Portman Road, carries the creative burden again, while Brobbey will be asked to turn half-chances into something more tangible. Behind them, the double pivot of Sadiki and Xhaka must give Sunderland a platform and, just as importantly, better protection for the back line.
