Shamrock Rovers’ UEFA Conference League journey ended in the cruellest fashion in Finland, a Graham Burke header into his own net deciding a tight, tense tie as KuPS advanced 2-1 on aggregate.
For the League of Ireland champions, it means no league-stage football, and another summer of regret after earlier exits to Egnatia and Ararat-Armenia. The target had been clear: reach the competition proper for a third straight season. Instead, a narrow 1-1 draw in Tallaght and a knife-edge second leg turned against them with 15 minutes left.
Rovers reshuffle, KuPS strike first blows
Stephen Bradley rolled the dice before kick-off, making two significant changes from the first leg. John O’Sullivan came in for Jack Byrne in midfield, while Aaron Greene replaced Burke up front. The message was obvious: fresh legs, fresh spark, same ambition.
KuPS, though, were first to bare their teeth.
Barely minutes into the contest, Tommi Jyry tore down the left and cut the ball back dangerously, only for Lee Grace to read it and hack clear for a corner. That set-piece came to nothing, but it was a warning. Soon after, captain Petteri Pennanen tried his luck from distance, his shot deflecting out for another corner that Rovers again managed to repel.
Slowly, the visitors settled. The Hoops’ first real opening arrived from O’Sullivan, drifting left and curling in a teasing ball. Jonathan Afolabi spun and got a shot away, blocked out to Grace, who met it with a thunderous effort. It looked spectacular, but Johannes Kreidl gathered it comfortably on 15 minutes.
The Finnish side hit back with more purpose. Parzyszek and Pennanen both forced Ed McGinty into sharp, reflex saves, the Rovers goalkeeper standing firm to keep the tie level and drag his side to half-time still very much alive.

The interval seemed to reset Rovers. They emerged brighter, sharper, and took control of the ball, pinning KuPS deeper and deeper.
Greene led the charge, cutting inside and unleashing a strike that stung Kreidl’s palms. Dylan Watts and Matt Healy both tried to pick out the corners during a spell where Rovers dictated tempo and territory, but neither could find the precision to tilt the tie.
Bradley sensed momentum and moved to double down on it. On 63 minutes, he introduced Burke and Byrne for O’Sullivan and Afolabi, looking to inject craft and a goal threat as KuPS retreated into their shell.
The pressure built. The breakthrough, though, came at the wrong end.
Burke’s nightmare moment
On 73 minutes, KuPS finally escaped and earned a free-kick when Roberto Lopes fouled Gustav Engvall. It felt like a rare chance for the hosts to breathe and push bodies forward.
They made it count.
The delivery was floated to the back post, where substitute Akseli Pukko rose and nodded it back into the danger area. The ball dropped awkwardly around the penalty spot. Burke, tracking back, tried to deal with it but could only glance a header past his own goalkeeper and into the net.
One miscued touch. One brutal twist. And what had been a controlled Rovers spell suddenly turned into a desperate chase.
Bradley reacted again, throwing on Michael Noonan to bolster the attack and Adam Brennan for Watts in midfield on 82 minutes. Brennan buzzed between the lines, Noonan darted into channels, and Rovers pushed bodies forward in search of a lifeline.
KuPS, though, shut the door. Compact, disciplined, and happy to sit on their lead, they restricted Rovers to half-chances and blocked crosses, managing the final minutes with a calmness that belied the stakes.
The whistle went. KuPS celebrated progression. Rovers were left to absorb another European exit decided not by a moment of opposition brilliance, but by one of their own.
For the Premier Division leaders, the domestic title race now stands alone as their stage. The question is whether nights like this in Finland will harden them for the next European tilt, or haunt them when the draw comes around again.
