SC Cambuur Fans Injured After Feyenoord Fireworks Incident

SC Cambuur say fans suffered “burns, hearing damage and eye injuries” after fireworks were hurled from the away end by Feyenoord supporters during Sunday’s league match.

The trouble flared in the first half at the Kooi Stadion. With the game underway, a large group of visiting fans in the away section lit a mass of red flares, turning the stand into a wall of smoke and colour. Then the fireworks started flying.

Play was halted for around 10 minutes as fireworks were thrown, some aimed towards sections holding home supporters. Panic and anger rippled through the stands while players waited on the pitch for the situation to calm down.

SC Cambuur later confirmed in a statement that five home fans had been injured, detailing burns, hearing damage and eye injuries among the reported cases.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from the scenes. The club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and confirmed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst – who served as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season – had apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle on behalf of the Rotterdam side.

SC Cambuur’s stance was blunt. “It should be clear that setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” the club said, condemning the actions that scarred what should have been a routine league fixture.

Recently promoted back to the Eredivisie after three seasons in the second tier, Cambuur now find themselves dealing with an off-pitch crisis rather than simply focusing on survival at the top level. The club stressed it would work with authorities to identify and punish those responsible.

Feyenoord, for their part, announced they will request camera footage as they begin their own investigation. The pictures from the away end are likely to decide how hard the next sanctions fall – and on whom.
