William Saliba Returns to Arsenal's Champions League Squad

Arsenal have received the news they most wanted before Europe returns: William Saliba is back on the Champions League list.

The French centre-back, who hasn’t kicked a ball this season after his back injury flared up again, has been named in Mikel Arteta’s 22-man squad for the upcoming league phase. For a club still nursing the scars of last May’s final defeat, it changes the mood.

Saliba steps back into the frame

Arsenal’s last act in the Champions League was brutal. A penalty shootout in Budapest, a miss from Gabriel, and Paris Saint-Germain walking away with the trophy. Saliba, who had formed such a formidable partnership with Gabriel at the heart of defence, could only watch that decisive spot-kick sail over as PSG retained their crown.

Now his name is back on the team sheet. That alone lifts the place.

Saliba revealed during the World Cup that he had pushed through significant pain in Arsenal’s title chase, determined to help end a 22-year wait for the Premier League. He then anchored their run to the Champions League final. The cost was a back problem that has kept him out of this campaign so far.

There is still no firm date for his return to the pitch. But being registered for Europe is a clear signal: Arsenal expect him to play a part.

Defensive reshuffle and new faces

Arteta and the recruitment team have not stood still while Saliba recovers. Arsenal moved decisively into the market, paying £51million to prise Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa to reinforce the centre of defence. In Saliba’s absence, Cristhian Mosquera has stepped in and handled the responsibility with composure, but the plan has always been to restore their defensive leader when fit.

The European squad list underlines the scale of Arsenal’s rebuild. New signings Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Ilan Meslier and Konsa are all included, giving Arteta fresh options across the pitch as he juggles domestic and continental demands.

There is another calculated gamble too. Jurrien Timber, still battling a persistent groin issue that has stalled his progress, is also named in the group. Arsenal are clearly prepared to wait, banking on his quality for the latter stages if his recovery finally clicks.

For now, though, it is Saliba’s presence on that sheet of paper that will catch the eye. After the heartbreak of Budapest and a summer of uncertainty over his fitness, Arsenal’s European campaign might just feel a little more secure with their No2 back in the plans.
