Ruggeri Embraces Premier League Challenge with Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s new signing Ruggeri says he “had no doubts” about swapping Atletico Madrid for the Premier League as he targets trophies under Unai Emery and a long-awaited Italy debut.

The 24-year-old arrives in Birmingham off the back of a whirlwind two years. He surged through Atalanta’s system, earned a five-year deal at Atletico last season, racked up 47 appearances and seven assists across all competitions, and now lands at Villa Park with his reputation rising fast.

“I am very happy to be here,” he told Villa’s official channels. “It’s very exciting for me to be part of this club; I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and start this adventure.

“I was really enchanted by the project of the team, I know it’s a huge league with big expectations, and looking at recent results, I had no doubts about saying yes and being part of this club.”

A European-hardened recruit

Ruggeri does not arrive as a prospect in need of shelter. He comes with European miles already on the clock.

Between Atalanta and Atletico, the Italian left-back has played 23 times in the Champions League, supplying three assists. Coaches trusted him on some of the biggest nights on the continent, and that experience is part of what appealed to Emery.

Just as importantly, he brings options. Ruggeri can tuck in as a conventional full-back or push higher as a wing-back in a five-man midfield, a profile that fits neatly with Emery’s tactical tweaks and in-game adjustments.

“I’ve definitely watched lots of Aston Villa games,” Ruggeri said. “I was really impressed by the intensity that the coach wants, the quality of the football he demands, and this is why I had no doubts about coming here to begin defending these club colours.

“Last season was important for me, and I hope to do just as well with Aston Villa, and then win a trophy with this club.”

Chasing Italy and chasing silverware

For all his club success, one thing still eludes him. A senior cap for Italy.

Ruggeri has been called into Azzurri squads but is still waiting to step on the pitch. Moving into the glare of the Premier League spotlight is a calculated move, a bid to catch the eye of the national team staff and turn those call-ups into minutes.

His footballing education started with one of the game’s greats in mind.

“As a child I really liked Paolo Maldini as a left-back,” he admitted. “But over the years I didn’t have a specific player to model myself on. He was the one I looked up to when I was a kid.”

Now he wants his own legacy, not someone else’s blueprint.

Villa debut on the horizon

The wait to see him in claret and blue may not be long. Villa face Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend, then a heavyweight meeting with Arsenal looms. The schedule is unforgiving; the opportunity is huge.

Ruggeri has already been studying his new stage.

“I saw many videos and photos of the stadium, and I can’t wait to play there, because I saw the fans are incredible. I can’t wait to get to know the atmosphere,” he said.

Villa, buoyed by recent European success and steady domestic progress, are a club on the rise. Ruggeri steps into a dressing room full of belief, into a league that will test every part of his game, and into a moment that could define his international future.

Now it is over to him to turn excitement into impact.
