Arsenal Targets Man Utd Academy Duo Scanlon and Ogunneye
Arsenal have launched an ambitious raid on Manchester United’s academy, pushing to sign young duo Scanlon and Ogunneye in a move that underlines a sharp new edge to the club’s youth recruitment.
The Premier League champions are targeting the pair as part of an aggressive overhaul of their junior ranks this summer, with confidence growing in north London that both players can be prised away from Old Trafford.
This is not just another youth deal. It is a response.
United have already dipped into Arsenal’s system in recent seasons, snapping up Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven. Those moves stung in north London and helped set up a simmering rivalry between two of English football’s most storied academies. Now Arsenal are swinging back.
Arsenal’s counter-punch
Scanlon, 19, and Ogunneye, 20, both spent last season out on loan as they chased senior football away from United’s underage sides.
Scanlon managed one goal in six appearances for League Two side Swindon Town, a brief but valuable taste of the men’s game. Ogunneye saw far more action, playing 21 times for Newport County before returning to United in January.
Those spells have sharpened their appetite for regular first-team opportunities. According to reports, both players are now ready to leave United permanently in search of a clearer pathway to senior football.
Arsenal have moved quickly. It is believed Scanlon has already agreed a two-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months, a structure that signals genuine commitment rather than a speculative punt. The club view him and Ogunneye as part of a broader push to secure some of the best emerging talent in the domestic market.
New academy era under De Maesschalck
The timing is no coincidence. Arsenal’s youth rebuild follows the arrival of Pascal De Maesschalck as the club’s new academy head, replacing Per Mertesacker.
De Maesschalck, who has built a reputation across Europe for his work in youth development, has been brought in to sharpen Arsenal’s talent pipeline and ensure a consistent flow of prospects capable of challenging for first-team places.
Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the vision clearly, saying Arsenal are “delighted” to have De Maesschalck on board, praising his “extensive experience from some of Europe’s leading football clubs” and “outstanding track record in youth development”. The message from the top is blunt: Arsenal intend to identify, attract and develop the best young players available.
That strategy is already visible. Scanlon and Ogunneye are not isolated targets; they are part of a cluster.
Paperwork, compensation – and what comes next
Arsenal now need to complete the formalities. The club are working on the paperwork and compensation arrangements required to bring both Scanlon and Ogunneye to London from United.
They are not the only teenagers expected through the door. Deals for Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew are also understood to be progressing, adding further depth and competition to the academy ranks.
The question now moves from recruitment to progression. With Mikel Arteta demanding intensity, intelligence and versatility from his senior squad, every one of these youngsters will arrive knowing the bar is high but the pathway is real.
Supporters will watch closely. Can this new wave of signings turn an academy arms race with Manchester United into genuine first-team impact at the Emirates?
