Ron Jans Reflects on FC Utrecht's Struggles and Offers Support to Anthony Correia
Ron Jans watched FC Utrecht’s collapse against PSV and saw something painfully familiar.
The 1-6 hammering in Eindhoven left Anthony Correia under intense pressure after a nightmare start to life in charge, and the former Utrecht coach admitted on NOS Studio Sport that it hit him personally.
“I have to say, it does hurt me,” Jans said. “Because I had a great time at FC Utrecht. So they have to stick together and fight.”
This is not sympathy from a distance. Jans has lived this storm himself in Utrecht. Last season he went nine league matches without a win, a run that dragged the club towards crisis and forced him to confront his own body language as much as his tactics.
“I see those images of Correia and of Willem Janssen,” he recalled. “I saw that in myself in January as well. That really wasn't good either, but then I thought: hello, if the leader looks like that...”
The realisation jolted him. The next morning, Jans brought those clips into the dressing room and put them in front of his players.
“So the next morning I showed those images to the group,” he said. He laid it out plainly: this is how it looks from the outside, this is what the squad is projecting.
He then told his players: “Listen, that is how it is at that moment, but we are sticking together now and we are going to fight. We will come through it.”
The message worked. Utrecht stabilised, climbed away from trouble and finished the season with their reputation restored. That experience shapes the advice Jans now sends in Correia’s direction.
“You can see that now as well,” he said, pointing to how quickly a mood can flip once results turn. “Then it just has to happen in the next match,” he urged, calling on Correia to stay positive and keep the group united.
Right now, the table is brutal. Utrecht are second from bottom in the Eredivisie, with just one point from their first four matches and a goal difference shredded by PSV’s six-goal show.
Next week, they host Go Ahead Eagles in the Galgenwaard. For Correia, and for a restless fanbase, it already feels like one of those early-season games that can either deepen a crisis or spark a recovery.
