Roma vs Inter: Scudetto Holders Face Tough Test in Capital

Inter know their way around the Stadio Olimpico. The Scudetto holders have won their last five Serie A visits to Roma, walking out of the capital with points and a little bit of swagger each time.

On Saturday night, that comfort blanket disappears. Gian Piero Gasperini has turned Roma into something far more awkward.

Both teams arrive with perfect league records and 12 points from 12. Roma sit top on goal difference. Inter lurk just beneath them. It is Round 5, but it already feels like a barometer for the season.

Roma’s first real Scudetto examination

Roma have started fast, but not yet against a heavyweight. Beating Atalanta 2-1 at home and winning 2-0 at Torino are tidy, efficient results. They are not statements.

Gasperini’s side have added European evidence too, drawing 1-1 away at Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, with Bryan Cristante on the scoresheet. It came at a cost. Evan Ndicka is unavailable, Manu Koné is still a doubt, and the back line will need to be reshuffled. Wesley, at least, has shaken off a knock picked up in Istanbul and is fit.

The probable Roma XI underlines the new identity:

Svilar; Mancini, Balerdi, Hermoso; Lulli, Cristante, Pisilli, Wesley; Soulé, Dybala, Malen.

It is a blend of bite, legs and imagination, but it is also a group that will be asked to handle Inter’s most ruthless weapons without Ndicka’s presence in the back three.

This is where the narrative gets uncomfortable for Roma. They have lost nine of their last 11 meetings with Inter. Gasperini’s personal record against the Nerazzurri is one of the worst of his career: just five wins in 32 attempts. History leans heavily towards the champions.

That is why the market angle leans that way too. Inter on a Draw No Bet line at 1.85 implies a 54.1% chance once the stalemate is stripped out. In a fixture this tight, removing the draw and siding with the team that has repeatedly found a way past Roma looks a logical play.

Chivu’s Inter already showing their teeth

Cristian Chivu has wasted no time. Four Serie A games, four wins. Inter have already come through turbulence, and that matters.

On Monday, Udinese stunned them with two goals inside 16 minutes at San Siro. Inter barely blinked and still ran out 5-3 winners. It was their second straight home match in which they overturned a 2-0 deficit. Before that, they had beaten Napoli 3-2 in another wild comeback.

This is a team that refuses to stay down.

Europe has been less kind. Inter lost 2-1 away at Real Madrid in the Champions League, a reminder that this project is still growing. Hakan Çalhanoğlu missed the Udinese game entirely through injury, while John Stones limped off and now faces a race against time for the Olimpico.

Even so, the likely XI oozes authority:

J. Martínez; Akanji, Stones, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Mkhitaryan, Zielinski, Carlos Augusto; Thuram, Lautaro.

It is built to dominate territory, squeeze mistakes, and unleash its front two.

Lautaro saved for Rome

Lautaro Martínez watched most of the Udinese chaos from the bench. Chivu kept his captain back with this fixture in mind. That decision tells you everything about how Inter view the trip to Roma.

The numbers suggest Lautaro is ready to explode. Two league goals from 3.1 expected goals this season points to underperformance rather than any decline. The chances are coming; the finishing usually follows.

He already showed that against elite opposition, scoring twice in the 3-2 comeback win over Napoli. Last season he hit 17 goals in Serie A and 22 in all competitions. He is Inter’s reference point, their emotional leader and their most reliable finisher.

Now he faces a Roma defence stripped of Ndicka. For a player of Lautaro’s instincts, that is an opening.

Backing him to score at 2.40 – an implied probability of 41.7% – looks generous given his role, his volume of chances, and Roma’s reshuffled back line.

Thuram’s shooting volume screams value

If Lautaro brings the edge, Marcus Thuram brings the chaos.

His shot output this season has been outrageous: 7.7 attempts per 90 minutes, with 2.6 of those on target. Those are centrepiece striker numbers, not someone quietly playing second fiddle.

On that basis, asking Thuram to register three or more shots looks modest. The odds of 1.77 imply just a 56.5% chance, which feels light given his current role and confidence.

The Frenchman has already scored against Udinese and in the comeback over Napoli. Chivu trusted the Lautaro–Thuram partnership in the Champions League away at Real Madrid. It should be restored here after the rotation on Monday, with both forwards expected to start in Rome.

Inter have scored in every game this season. They create, they recycle attacks, and they keep feeding their strikers. The only real risk to the Thuram bet is an early substitution in a high-intensity away fixture, but on form alone he is in the kind of mood where he looks for goal at every opportunity.

Roma want this to be the night they announce themselves as genuine Scudetto contenders. Inter arrive as the champions, scarred by Madrid but hardened by domestic comebacks, with a captain rested and a strike partner in full flow.

If Gasperini’s Roma are truly different, this is where they prove it.
