Real Sociedad tightened their grip on the European qualification battle with a controlled 2–0 victory over relegation-threatened Levante at Reale Arena, in a La Liga Regular Season - 30 clash that underlined the gap between the sides’ ambitions.
Coming into the afternoon, Real Sociedad sat 6th on 41 points, on course for the Conference League qualification places, while Levante arrived in San Sebastian 19th with 26 points and deep in a survival battle. By full time, the hosts had moved to 44 points with a 48–45 goal record, while Levante’s plight worsened, stuck on 26 points and now at 34–50 on goals.
First Half
The tone was set early in a combative first half. On 15 minutes, tempers flared as Manuel Sánchez went into the book for unsportsmanlike conduct, swiftly followed by Ander Barrenetxea receiving a yellow card for Real Sociedad in the same minute. Just two minutes later, Matias Moreno was also cautioned for tripping, as Levante’s back line struggled to contain the hosts’ movement between the lines.
Real Sociedad’s territorial dominance – they would finish with 60% possession and 18 total shots – found its reward on the half-hour mark. From a well-worked phase, J. Martin scored, assisted by C. Soler, sweeping home to give the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead. The goal reflected the underlying numbers: Real Sociedad would end the match with an expected_goals figure of 2.72, compared to Levante’s meagre 0.28.
The visitors’ frustration grew almost immediately. In the 31st minute, Levante coach Luis Castro was shown a yellow card on the touchline, further evidence of a side feeling the strain of their league position and the flow of the game.
Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz’s whistle for half-time came with Real Sociedad 1–0 up, having already racked up a flurry of corners (they would finish with 11) and repeatedly pinning Levante back. Yet Levante had threatened sporadically, forcing Álex Remiro into action; by the end, the Real Sociedad goalkeeper would make 4 saves, perfectly matching Levante’s 4 shots on goal.
Second Half
Castro responded with a double change at the break. At 46 minutes, P. Martinez came on for I. Losada, and moments later A. Matturro came on for M. Moreno, as Levante sought more solidity and freshness. The intensity did not drop. On 54 minutes, C. Espi was booked for roughing, another yellow in an increasingly ill-tempered contest.
Levante continued to shuffle their pack just before the hour. At 59 minutes, I. Romero came on for K. Tunde, and U. Raghouber came on for O. Rey, as the visitors tried to inject attacking impetus and more control in midfield. But Real Sociedad’s structure held firm, anchored by Beñat Turrientes and Carlos Soler.
Pellegrino Matarazzo then turned to his own bench. On 63 minutes, P. Marin came on for A. Barrenetxea, followed a minute later by B. Mendez coming on for L. Sucic at 64 minutes, adding fresh energy and creativity in the final third. At 69 minutes, A. Elustondo came on for D. Caleta-Car, a defensive adjustment to manage the game state and Levante’s sporadic counters.
Levante’s final attacking roll of the dice came on 81 minutes, when T. Abed came on for V. Garcia, but the change did little to alter the rhythm. Real Sociedad’s superiority was finally reflected in a second goal two minutes later. In the 83rd minute, B. Mendez scored, assisted by P. Marin, capping a superb cameo from both substitutes and effectively sealing the contest at 2–0.
Matarazzo used the cushion to protect legs in the closing stages. At 85 minutes, I. Aguirre came on for B. Turrientes, and O. Oskarsson came on for G. Guedes, as Real Sociedad rotated with an eye on the run-in. There was still time for a late booking: J. Martin, already the opening goalscorer, received a yellow card on 87 minutes, the final notable act of a disciplined defensive display.
Statistically, Real Sociedad’s control was comprehensive. Their 5 shots on goal to Levante’s 4, combined with 4 blocked shots and 468 total passes at an 85% completion rate, underpinned a performance of maturity. Levante, with 314 passes at 78% accuracy and only 8 total shots, never truly convinced as an attacking force, despite Mathew Ryan’s 3 saves keeping the scoreline respectable given the hosts’ 2.72 expected_goals.
For Real Sociedad, this was the kind of professional home win that sustains a European qualification push. For Levante, it was another sobering afternoon in a relegation dogfight that is slipping further from their control.
