Manchester United's Interest in Alejandro Balde: Player Stands Firm

Manchester United have picked up the phone. The call went to Jorge Mendes, and the name on the agenda was clear: Alejandro Balde.

With the search for a new left-back accelerating, United have started sounding out options across Europe. Lewis Hall of Newcastle United was one of the early targets, but that door has effectively been slammed shut by the Magpies. So the focus has shifted. New list, new priorities – and Balde sits on it.

United make their move

According to Fabrizio Romano, United have contacted super-agent Mendes to understand Balde’s situation at FC Barcelona and what it would take to prise him away from Catalonia. Not a formal bid, not yet, but a clear enquiry about conditions and feasibility.

The timing is no coincidence. Mendes is in Barcelona, holding a series of meetings on different dossiers. One of them concerns Marc Casado, who is expected to leave Spotify Camp Nou. Another, inevitably now, will be Balde.

With Manchester United’s interest registered, Mendes is expected to raise the matter when he sits down with club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. United want clarity. Barça will have to state their position.

Balde’s answer: he’s not going anywhere

There is, however, one major obstacle for United – the player himself.

Romano reports that Balde has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer. The La Masia product is settled, committed, and still sees his future at his boyhood club, even as the competition stiffens on the left flank.

Joao Cancelo’s permanent arrival gives Barça another option on that side and cranks up the internal battle for minutes. For some, that would be a signal to look elsewhere. Balde sees it differently. At 22, he is prepared to fight for his place and is not entertaining an exit.

The only scenario that could force a rethink, according to the report, is if Barcelona themselves push him towards the door. Until that happens – and there is no indication they have – Balde’s stance is firm.

With less than two weeks left in the transfer window, the story sits in that tense space between interest and action. United have made their curiosity known. Balde, for now, is unmoved.

Back from injury, back in the XI

All this comes on the back of a stuttering pre-season for the defender.

A back problem disrupted the early part of his summer and kept him out of action when others were building rhythm. Once recovered, he started to claw those minutes back, featuring from the off in friendlies against FC Basel and Al-Ahly, including the Joan Gamper Trophy clash last night.

Despite the transfer noise, his immediate future looks straightforward. Under contract until 2028, Balde is expected to start against Elche this weekend, with Cancelo only just through the door and still integrating.

So United wait, watching from a distance, hoping an opening appears. Barcelona lean on a long-term deal and a player who wants to stay. The clock on the window keeps ticking. Who blinks first?
