Real Madrid’s 4–1 win over Rayo Vallecano gave Jose Mourinho more than three points. It gave him a platform.
In the bowels of the stadium, after a night that briefly flickered with danger before Madrid pulled away, Mourinho sat down and went straight to one of the names on everyone’s lips: Arda Guler.
“Arda Guler plays a lot when he is on the pitch,” he said, underlining every word with the kind of certainty that leaves no room for debate. “I will say with 100% certainty that if Diomande had not started today, the first question would have been: why is Diomande not playing?” he said. The selection debate around the young player doesn’t bother him. It almost amuses him.
“I am a little too old to feel pressure because of a player's situation,” he added, leaning on experience. “You have different lists of players, and sometimes you have to pray that no player gets injured, and at other times you have many solutions.”
Right now, Real Madrid sit in that second scenario. Options everywhere. Competition everywhere. And Diomande, raw but gifted, sits right in the middle of it.
“He will improve gradually. He has little time at the top level, and he has a lot to learn tactically. But he possesses amazing potential.”
That potential, Mourinho believes, is not limited to a single role. It is a toolbox.
“Diomande gives us many options in one-on-one duels, passing and shooting,” he explained. “And he can also play in Vini's position, and on the right side, just as Arda can play there or in Bellingham's position. At the moment, I want to help him develop.”
In a squad stacked with stars, that versatility is gold. It also raises the stakes for every appearance he makes.
Vinicius on the brink
From the future to the present. From promise to a player already carrying the weight of a club and a country.
Mourinho turned to Vinicius Junior, a constant reference point in any discussion about Real Madrid’s attacking edge.
“Vinicius is in better physical shape than ever, but he is just one millimetre short of reaching his top speed,” Mourinho said. Not a metaphor. A measurement. The Brazilian is almost at full throttle.
“His ability to repeat efforts is immense. It is a process he is gradually absorbing,” Mourinho continued. The work without the ball, the pressing, the constant sprints – all of it now looks more sustainable, not just spectacular.
Mentally, Mourinho sees a player who has grown into the shirt. “Mentally, he is very strong, and he knows Real Madrid more than anyone else. He plays with great responsibility, which is the responsibility of playing for Real Madrid and the Brazil national team. He is calm. The goals will come.”
That last line hung in the air. No panic. No obsession over numbers. Just the conviction that with this version of Vinicius, the finishing touch is inevitable.
On a night when the scoreline told one story, Mourinho’s words told another: a squad rich in talent, a coach unafraid to rotate, and a group of players – from Diomande to Guler to Vinicius – being pushed, prodded and prepared for something bigger than a routine league win in September.
