Real Madrid Signs Ibrahima Konaté on Free Transfer

Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, striking a deal to sign Ibrahima Konaté on a four-year contract after the France defender’s departure from Liverpool.

The 27-year-old centre-back will join the European champions on a free transfer at the end of June, having failed to reach an agreement with Liverpool over his value and wages. What began as routine renewal talks at Anfield ended with one of Europe’s elite clubs stepping in to take him to the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid confirmed they have reached an agreement with Konaté “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until 30 June, 2030”.

A long-term commitment, and a clear indication of how they see his role in the next cycle of their defence.

For Liverpool, it closes the book on a defender they signed from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m on a five-year deal. Konaté went on to make 183 appearances in all competitions for the club, collecting the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at Anfield. At his best, he brought power, recovery pace and a sense of authority to Jürgen Klopp’s back line.

The ending, though, was abrupt. Konaté revealed he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to Liverpool supporters when the Reds played their final Premier League game of the season against Brentford on 24 May. At that point, he said, “I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.”

Now his focus shifts to a very different stage. Konaté is currently with the France squad at the 2026 World Cup, preparing for knockout football while his club future is already settled. When that tournament ends, another challenge awaits: walking into a Real Madrid dressing room built on trophies and expectation, and proving he belongs at the heart of it.
