Now comes a pivotal week. Betis at home in La Liga, then Malaga and Levante before a three-week international break. It already feels like a stretch that could shape the narrative around Perez’s early tenure.
History gives him at least one reason to believe. Across five previous managerial meetings with Betis, he has never lost (one win, four draws). It is a slim cushion, but right now Villarreal will take any edge they can find.
Betis riding the wave
Betis arrive in a very different frame of mind. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have opened the 2026-27 season with four wins from five competitive fixtures and a statement scalp: a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in their last league outing.
They backed that up in Europe with something even more dramatic. In their first Champions League appearance since the 2005-06 group stage, Betis went to Lille and won 3-2, twice coming from behind.
Marc Bartra, more commonly the calm presence at the back, produced a brace to drag his team level on two occasions. Then Troy Parrott, the match-winner against Real Madrid, marked his Champions League debut by striking the decisive goal again. Two huge games, two decisive contributions. His confidence will be sky-high heading into La Ceramica.
The table underlines Betis’s momentum. They sit fifth in La Liga, just three points behind early pacesetters Barcelona and Real Madrid. With that kind of start, trips like this stop being about survival and start being about ambition.
They also know this ground holds no fear. Last season, Betis took four points from their two league meetings with Villarreal, including a wild draw at La Ceramica where Antony scored twice to salvage a point from two goals down. That result extended Betis’s unbeaten run in away league games against Villarreal to four (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat here in October 2021.
Team news and likely lineups
Villarreal’s problems are not just about form. They are likely to be without Carlos Romero and Juan Foyth, with the latter expected to miss out again after sitting out the last two matches through injury.
There is a change between the posts. Peter Gulacsi is set for his La Liga debut after taking over from Luiz Junior for the narrow defeat in Dortmund. His experience and authority could be crucial for a defence that has leaked too many goals.
Perez is expected to rotate to keep legs fresh in a congested week. Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno are all pushing to start, giving Villarreal options to tweak both shape and tempo.
