Premier League Gameweek 5: Key Updates from Press Conferences

The final wave of Premier League press conferences before Gameweek 5 rolled through on Friday, with managers offering clarity, reassurance and the odd warning shot ahead of the weekend. Arsenal, Brighton and Fulham all delivered significant team news, with fitness calls that could shape their line-ups and, in some cases, their early-season rhythm.

Arsenal: Arteta Buoyant on Defensive Options

Mikel Arteta cut a confident figure. Ben White, who looked to be struggling with a groin issue in the win over Sunderland, now seems set to be available.

“They are all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so we are really positive about everybody,” Arteta said when asked directly about White’s condition.

The optimism didn’t stop there. Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber all missed the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town, but Arteta’s update suggested that absence was temporary rather than troubling. Timber’s omission had already been framed as a minutes-management call, and the manager doubled down on that wider sense of calm.

“Yeah, we have another session, they are all willing to be part of it, and we have another session to try to make sure that they are fit,” he added, confirming that Hincapie, Mosquera and Timber were included in his “all good” assessment.

One key name does remain missing. William Saliba is still sidelined with a back problem, a notable absentee in an otherwise healthy defensive unit.

Beyond the injury bulletin, Arteta took time to underline just how impressed he is with Ezri Konsa, both as a player and a presence inside the club.

“I heard some great things about Ezri before he joined and when you have him daily you just realise the magnitude of the player that we signed, not only the player but the person, the way he presents himself, the way he’s able to connect with people immediately,” Arteta said.

He went further, highlighting Konsa’s relationship with “Big Gabi” and hinting at the importance of that partnership.

“When you see those two in the corridors talking, the way they interact with each other, it seems like they’ve been here for a long, long, long time together, which is great because that’s a partnership that in my opinion is extremely important on the field and then his attributes, the quality that he delivers to the team is something that really makes us better.”

Arteta also touched on Eberechi Eze’s role off the left, making it clear that this is no experiment for the attacker.

“He’s always played there in his career, that’s where all his biggest moments in his career and the highlights of his career have come and I think it’s a place that he feels very, very, very comfortable,” Arteta explained. “As well he can occupy different spaces through them but that’s the space that generally he has created big moments for previous clubs as well to win matches.”

As for selection on that flank, he framed the Eze versus Christos Tzolis call as a nuanced one.

“In form, in the opponent, in the relationship that we have within that unit, there are a lot of factors [in deciding who starts between Eze and Christos Tzolis on the left].”

The message from Arsenal’s manager was clear: the squad is strong, options are plentiful, and the real decisions now are tactical rather than medical.

Brighton: Azeez Waits, Vuskovic Ready

At Brighton, Fabian Hurzeler will have to wait to unleash new signing Femi Azeez. The forward’s hamstring problem has not cleared in time, so his debut is pushed back beyond the September international break.

“I think that the best thing for Femi is that he uses this [international break] to get back on his highest physical level and then get used to our style of play,” Hurzeler said. “Then, we will try to work with him individually and hopefully integrate him back into the team, then definitely after the international break, he will be on a top level and we can use him in games.”

The absentee list remains lengthy. Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Zadok Yohanna are all still out.

There is better news at the back. Jaouen Hadjam, who took a knock in midweek, is “able to play”, while Luka Vuskovic has shaken off the cramp that forced him off in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.

“He’s young, he will recover fast. He definitely will be an option for tomorrow,” Hurzeler said of Vuskovic, sounding confident about the defender’s readiness.

Lewis Dunk was simply rested for the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford and returns to the fold. Georginio Rutter, who featured as a substitute in that game, has also stepped back onto the pitch after his own injury lay-off, adding another attacking option as Brighton juggle league and cup demands.

The pattern is familiar for Brighton: injuries bite, but the system keeps moving, and the next wave of players is already being eased back in.

Fulham: Tete Ruled Out Under Concussion Protocol

Fulham’s update was more straightforward but no less significant. Kenny Tete will miss out as he follows concussion protocol after a head issue. With Tom Cairney still out with a knee problem, Marco Silva must again adjust his plans without two experienced figures.

The absence of Tete, in particular, reshapes Fulham’s right side. The question now is whether his teammates can absorb that loss and maintain stability, or whether this becomes one of those small turning points that lingers over the early weeks of their season.
