Plymouth Argyle Secures First Away Victory in League One
Plymouth Argyle finally cracked the away-day code, storming to their first Sky Bet League One victory on the road with a 3-2 win over winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts far more than it did Tom Cleverley’s side.
For long spells, this was controlled, composed, and ruthless from Argyle.
Evans sets the tone
Plymouth needed a little time to settle, but once they did, they began to pick Doncaster apart. The opener came on 28 minutes, and it was all about reacting first.
Oliver Irow’s strike forced Tommy Simkin into a save, but the Doncaster goalkeeper could only parry the effort back into danger. Will Evans was alive to it, sharpest in the box, and turned the rebound home to give Argyle the lead their growing dominance deserved.
Doncaster’s response was flickering rather than sustained. Alfie May tried to drag them level before the break with an audacious bicycle kick, only to see it deflected over. It summed up their afternoon: plenty of endeavour, little reward.
May strikes from the spot – briefly
The hosts did find a route back just after half-time. Six minutes into the second period, Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed to the spot.
May, denied earlier, stepped up in the 51st minute and made no mistake this time, driving his penalty home to haul Doncaster level and inject some noise back into the stadium.
For a moment, it felt like the momentum might swing. It didn’t.
The equaliser jolted Plymouth rather than rattled them. Cleverley’s team tightened their grip on midfield, moved the ball with more purpose, and pushed Doncaster deeper and deeper.
Pepple and Watts kill it off
The pressure finally told with 16 minutes to play. Bim Pepple was released into space in the 74th minute, and with Doncaster’s back line stretched, he showed real composure. One touch to steady himself, another to slide a calm finish past Simkin and restore Argyle’s lead.
Doncaster sagged. Plymouth sensed it.
On 83 minutes, the game was effectively over. Substitute Caleb Watts pounced on a defensive mix-up, reading the hesitation at the back and racing through to fire into an empty net. It was a gift, and he accepted it without a second thought.
At 3-1, Plymouth were cruising, their first away win of the league campaign all but secured.
Late twist, no turnaround
Doncaster barely laid a glove on Argyle in the closing stages. The hosts did not truly threaten a comeback until the contest had already slipped away from them.
Deep into stoppage time, they finally found a second goal. Sean Grehan rose to meet a Bayley McCann free-kick and thumped his header in, a powerful consolation that arrived in the final minute of added time.
By then, it was far too late.
Plymouth walked off with the points and a statement away performance. Doncaster walked off still searching for their first league win – and running out of excuses.
