Peter Schmeichel Critiques Manchester United's Defense After Hull Defeat
Peter Schmeichel has delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s defending in their shock defeat to Hull City, naming three players he believes were chiefly responsible for the loss.
Michael Carrick’s side stumbled badly on their Premier League return, undone by goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy as Hull claimed a statement win over the visitors.
Schmeichel tears into United’s defending
Breaking down the goals on Premier League Productions, the former Manchester United goalkeeper first highlighted Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven for their roles in Ajayi’s opener.
For the first goal, Schmeichel was furious with Dorgu’s positioning and awareness at the near post, accusing the defender of switching off at the worst possible moment.
“Observe Dorgu at the front post; he is not even watching the player taking the corner kick. At that precise moment, he loses focus and lacks the capability to block the first ball,” Schmeichel said, as he dissected the corner that led to Hull’s breakthrough.
The criticism did not stop there. Attention quickly turned to the back post, where Heaven allowed Oli McBurnie to outmuscle and outmanoeuvre him before Ajayi struck.
“And naturally, Ayden Heaven at the back post. He allows [Oli] McBurnie to get behind him. That is unacceptable. That is not how one should defend; one must be more assertive,” Schmeichel added, unimpressed by the lack of physicality and conviction in United’s box.
The pressure told, and Hull took full advantage.
Shaw singled out for decisive lapse
If the first goal angered Schmeichel, the second left him exasperated. This time, his focus turned to Luke Shaw and the defensive line that crumbled for Mendy’s goal.
Schmeichel accused Shaw of a costly lapse in concentration, arguing that the left-back’s positioning effectively gifted Hull the chance by playing their attackers onside at a crucial moment.
“It is the complete lack of concentration from Manchester United that disappoints me the most. I singled out Luke Shaw. Luke Shaw is two yards behind everyone else, putting everyone else onside. He should not be in that position. He was deceived by the dummy,” he said.
Schmeichel insisted that a player of Shaw’s experience should read the situation better and hold the line.
“If he stayed up there, he would be either offside or it would have gone out for a goal kick. That’s a disappointment for me, that an experienced team like that makes mistakes like that.”
For Schmeichel, these were not just isolated errors but signs of a wider problem: a lack of concentration and authority in key defensive moments.
Manchester United now have little time to dwell on the defeat. Another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, visit Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30 — and after Hull exposed such frailties, Carrick’s players know that any repeat could turn early-season nerves into something far more serious.
