Penybont Maintains Unbeaten Start with 1-0 Win over Colwyn Bay

Penybont’s unbeaten start to the Cymru Premier season rolled on with a hard-edged 1-0 win over Colwyn Bay – a night that began with concern and ended with relief.

The hosts were hit early. Inside 20 bruising minutes, summer signings Jonathan Leko and Ryan Hill both went off injured, ripping up Rhys Griffiths’ game plan before it had really settled. For a side still knitting together new arrivals, it could easily have turned into a long, anxious evening.

Instead, a substitute stepped in and changed it.

Owain Pritchard, thrown on earlier than expected, seized his moment. When Bay keeper Mark Halstead misjudged a situation in his own box, Pritchard reacted quickest, pouncing on the error and finishing from close range to give Penybont the lead.

The pressure almost told again soon after. Veteran forward Chris Venables, still the man Penybont look to in big moments, rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort that had Halstead beaten. A fraction lower and the game might have been out of sight.

Colwyn Bay refused to fold. Chasing the game in the second half, they pushed higher and began to ask serious questions of the home defence. Young goalkeeper Daniel Higgs answered them all. He stood firm to deny Callum Bratley and then Ethan Roberts as Bay turned up the tempo and pinned Penybont back for spells.

The closing stages were tense, the pattern clear: Bay pressing, Penybont digging in, every clearance cheered a little louder than the last. Griffiths’ side bent but did not break.

When the whistle finally went, the scoreline stayed at 1-0, Penybont moved up to sixth, and their unbeaten record remained intact. On a night of early setbacks and late pressure, that resilience may prove just as valuable as the three points.
