Pedro Absence Raises Injury Concerns for Chelsea as Caicedo Wait Continues
Pedro’s sparkling start to the season hit an abrupt pause on Tuesday – and he wasn’t the only key figure missing.
Sky Sports journalist James Savundra reported that the Brazilian forward was absent from the open section of Chelsea’s training session, a development that will jolt a fanbase already leaning heavily on his form.
Three goals. Three assists. Five games.
Pedro has been Chelsea’s sharpest attacking edge, the man who dragged them out of trouble again at the weekend with a late equaliser to salvage a point against Hull City. To see him missing from the main group, just days after that rescue act, instantly changes the mood around Cobham.
James joins Pedro on the sidelines
The concern deepened when it emerged that club captain Reece James and marquee midfielder Moises Caicedo were also absent from the core session.
James has been a pillar in Alonso’s reshaped side, operating centrally and completing the full 90 minutes in three of Chelsea’s four league games. There were no obvious signs of discomfort as he finished the draw at Hull, which makes his sudden disappearance from training all the more unsettling for the coaching staff.
A captain who looked fine on Saturday is now nowhere to be seen on Tuesday. That is the kind of development that sets medical rooms buzzing and supporters refreshing news feeds.
Caution over Caicedo
Alonso had already gone on record before the Hull game about the Ecuadorian’s stuttering campaign, stressing that Chelsea would not rush him back. The 24-year-old is still waiting for his first start of the season after a string of physical setbacks.
“Not yet, we’ll see for Brentford,” Alonso said last week when pressed on the possibility of a return for Friday’s clash, making it clear that caution would trump desperation.
“We’re not at a moment to take risks with him. Not yet; we are not yet,” he added, underlining just how wary the club is of aggravating the problem.
Caicedo’s year has been stop-start at best. He missed the opening fixture against Fulham, then managed only a 14‑minute cameo in the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton before the same issue flared up again. That relapse ruled him out of subsequent meetings with Arsenal and Leeds and has turned what should have been a statement season into a slow, frustrating grind.
A small ray of light
The session was not all doom and doubt. There was at least one positive thread for Alonso to cling to.
Summer signings Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained fully with the squad, a significant step as they edge closer to their first appearances for the club. For a Chelsea side suddenly fretting over its established stars, the sight of two fresh recruits integrating at full tilt offers a different kind of anticipation.
With Pedro and James now question marks and Caicedo still being wrapped in cotton wool, Alonso’s next team sheet could tell its own story. The only question is whether those new names arrive as welcome additions – or urgent necessities.
