Patrick Vieira Urges Martinez to Drop Ronaldo for World Cup Match
Patrick Vieira has never been one to tiptoe around a hard decision. Faced with the question that shadows every great player at the end of his career, the former France midfielder believes Portugal must now be brave with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Vieira argued that Roberto Martinez should consider leaving his captain out of Portugal’s next FIFA World Cup match, against Uzbekistan, after Ronaldo failed to score in the 1-1 draw with DR Congo.
For Vieira, the issue is blunt: the team must come before the legend.
“He [Martinez] has to think about the team first before thinking about Ronaldo. So he will have to make a really strong decision not to start him if the team is better without him,” the former Arsenal captain said.
It is not a cheap shot at a fading star. Vieira went out of his way to underline the scale of Ronaldo’s career, describing him as “an extraordinarily wonderful footballer” over the last twenty years. That is precisely why, in his view, the stakes are so high now.
“I worry for him [Ronaldo], his legacy will be spoiled a little bit if he kicks off and he gets taken off,” Vieira added, hinting at the potential friction if Ronaldo reacts badly to being substituted or sidelined.
The draw with DR Congo has sharpened the debate. Ronaldo, still the focal point of Portugal’s attack, could not find a way through, and questions over whether his presence helps or hinders the collective performance have resurfaced.
Vieira’s stance is clear. Martinez, he says, must be willing to make the kind of ruthless call that defines tournaments and, sometimes, reputations. For Portugal’s head coach, the next teamsheet against Uzbekistan will say as much about his authority as it does about Ronaldo’s place in the modern game.
