Palmeiras did not just edge ahead in this Copa do Brasil quarter-final. They tore the door off its hinges.
With Neymar watching on and insisting he was fully fit but rested, Santos were overwhelmed 3-0 in the first leg on Wednesday, a scoreline that flattered the visitors more than the hosts.
Lopez leads the charge
The tone was set early. Palmeiras stepped onto the front foot, Santos retreated, and the opening goal felt inevitable.
It arrived through Flaco Lopez, and it was a beauty. Given a yard of space outside the box, the forward let fly with a long-range strike that ripped past the Santos goalkeeper and ignited Allianz Parque. One clean hit, and the tie already looked tilted.

It could have been worse for Santos. Much worse.
With the visitors stretched and chasing shadows, Palmeiras carved them open repeatedly. Giay raced clear one-on-one and failed to convert. Mauricio did the same, squandering another golden chance. Both opportunities begged to be finished; both were wasted. Only those misses kept the scoreline from turning into a humiliation.
Gabigol’s introduction after the break did little to change the pattern. The Verdao backline stayed compact, disciplined, and largely untroubled.
Santos face brutal schedule and a mountain to climb
The calendar offers Santos no mercy.
They must first pick themselves up for a demanding away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend, a fixture that rarely allows any room for fragility or self-pity.
Then comes the real test of their character: the return leg at Vila Belmiro, where they will need to overturn a three-goal deficit against a Palmeiras side that just shut them down with ease. After that, a trip to Internacional awaits.
For Cuca, the equation is stark. Neymar has to return to the starting XI to restore any semblance of attacking sharpness. Without him, Santos looked blunt and predictable. With him, they at least have a player capable of bending a tie back in their favour.
