Noah Okafor Returns to Leeds United: Ready for a New Season
Noah Okafor walked back into Leeds United colours on Wednesday and, for the first time this summer, back into a game that felt like his own.
The Switzerland forward, fresh from a draining World Cup campaign that never really became his tournament, got his first pre-season minutes against Manchester United after returning to training last week. His country had gone deep enough – all the way to the quarter-finals – to push his break back, but not deep enough for him to feel truly involved.
On the grass again, that frustration started to shift.
“It was amazing to be back with the team on the pitch,” he told BBC Radio Leeds, the relief obvious. “I was really happy to be back and now we just have to keep building, working and looking forward day by day.”
It wasn’t a long run-out, just a first taste, but it was enough for Okafor to recognise himself in the game again.
“That’s the game I play, the game I used to play,” he said. “I need a few more days to work on my fitness... then when it starts I am ready.”
If pre-season offered a reset, the World Cup still lingers as a bruise. Okafor featured for only 19 minutes in the entire tournament, used just once as a substitute, a bit-part role that jarred with how he saw his own form.
“The World Cup was not so good for me because I didn’t play so much. The coach didn’t let me play, I don’t know why because I did really great,” he admitted. “I came with a lot of confidence, I did an amazing season but in the end he just decides like this.”
The disappointment is clear. So is the response.
“Now I keep it to the side,” he continued, “so just focus on Leeds. Give every day 100% in training and this season help the team again like last season.”
Last season’s numbers back up that sense of unfinished business. Eight goals and one assist in 28 Premier League appearances gave Leeds a direct, sharp threat in the final third, but Okafor is not treating that as a ceiling.
“I am even more hungry than last season,” he said. “I adapted more in the Premier League and adapted to the team. The most important thing is to stay healthy and fit, keep every day with a smile and try to help the team with goals and assists.”
A World Cup that left him on the fringes has clearly lit something. Leeds now stand to find out just how dangerous a fully motivated, fully fit Noah Okafor can be over a full Premier League campaign.
