Neymar Blames Santos Pitch for Injury in Copa do Brasil Exit

The mood at Santos turned from anxious to poisonous in a matter of minutes. A goalless draw with Palmeiras at Vila Belmiro sealed their Copa do Brasil quarter-final exit after a 3-0 first-leg defeat, but the scoreline was almost a sideshow. All eyes – and all anger – settled on Neymar’s right hamstring and the state of the pitch he blamed for it.

He limped off at the end of the first half, clutching the back of his leg, and the stadium’s tension snapped. What should have been a desperate push to overturn a heavy deficit became a night of fury, frustration and finger-pointing.

The match itself backed up at least part of his anger. Neymar’s injury was only the headline in a grim first-half casualty list. Lucas Verissimo went off early with an ankle problem. Barreal followed, also unable to continue. One high-stakes knockout tie, three injured players, one furious superstar – and a pitch squarely in the dock.

The sporting damage for Santos could deepen this weekend. According to ESPN, Neymar is a major doubt for Sunday’s Brasileiro clash with Internacional at Beira-Rio and is not expected to play. That leaves the coaching staff preparing for life without their main attraction, at least in the short term.

Arthur is set to be the one stepping into the creative void. The expectation is that he will debut in a more advanced role, operating almost as a classic number 10, tasked with stitching together an attack suddenly missing its focal point.

While Santos stewed, Palmeiras pounced.

Never shy when it comes to a rivalry jab, the Alviverde used Neymar’s complaints as ammunition. On Thursday, they fired off a sarcastic post on social media, turning the spotlight onto their own home, Nubank Parque, where the first leg had been played on a synthetic surface.

“We want to congratulate those responsible for the Nubank Parque field…” the club wrote, laying it on thick. They boasted that the grass is “always perfect and without holes” and “cared for daily,” urging followers to “believe it!” The tone left no doubt: this was trolling, Palmeiras-style.

Then they twisted the knife by echoing Neymar’s own words back at him. They spoke of offering opponents a “good playing field” and stressed that their players “feel safer because, during runs, the surface is always even.” To cap it off, they pointed to one stat they were keen to flaunt: Palmeiras claim to be the Serie A club with the fewest injuries over the last five years.

“Congratulations, you know? Great job,” the post concluded – a pointed mirror of Neymar’s exasperated rant.

So Santos leave the Copa do Brasil nursing bruised pride, a lengthy injury concern for their star man and an ugly debate over the state of their own pitch. Palmeiras, safely through and sniping from a distance, have turned the rivalry up another notch.

The next time these two meet, the scoreboard might not be the only thing everyone’s checking. The grass itself will be under scrutiny.
