Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Denies Assault Charges in Court

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, the former Premier League winger now with MK Dons, has appeared in court accused of assaulting his wife – charges he firmly denies.

The 34-year-old, who once lit up the top flight with Cardiff City and previously played for Wolves, is alleged to have attacked his wife, Saira, at their home in Shenstone, Staffordshire, in June.

Police were called to the luxury property and Mendez-Laing was arrested before being charged with assault by beating.

He appeared at Cannock magistrates’ court on Friday, arriving on crutches. In a brief hearing, the Birmingham-born forward spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, and entered a not guilty plea to one count of assault by beating.

The court was told that Saira, the mother of Mendez-Laing’s child, was allegedly struck repeatedly over the head and suffered an arm injury during the incident. The confrontation is said to have started after a disagreement about a phone. Mendez-Laing denies any physical attack.

Charges were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service last month.

District Judge Joseph O’Connor granted the player conditional bail and set a trial date for January next year.

International Career

Mendez-Laing represents the Guatemala national team, qualifying through his mother and maternal grandmother, who were both born in the Central American country. He scored four goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Cardiff in the 2019/20 season before leaving the club in September 2020.

Personal Life

Off the pitch, he married Saira in June last year. MK Dons marked the occasion by sharing a wedding photo and a congratulatory message on their official social media channels.

The League One club, currently 19th in the table, said it could not comment on an ongoing court case.
