Nathan Broadhead Ruled Out of Wales’ Nations League Campaign

Nathan Broadhead has been ruled out of Wales’ upcoming Nations League campaign after suffering a thigh injury in training with Wrexham.

The 28-year-old forward had been named in Craig Bellamy’s 28-man squad for a demanding set of League A fixtures against Portugal, Norway and a double header with Denmark. Instead, he will spend the international break on the treatment table.

The setback also sidelines him for Wrexham’s Championship clash with Southampton on Saturday (15:00 BST).

“Broady has strained his thigh in training, which is a shame because he was training well,” Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said. “That’s going to keep him out for the weekend but there’s nothing new from that.”

Asked directly whether the injury would rule Broadhead out of the Wales camp, Parkinson did not hesitate: “Yes.”

Broadhead, a 20-cap international, opened the season as a key figure for Wrexham, starting their first three Championship matches. His momentum stalled quickly. He has not featured in any of the last four fixtures, against Millwall, Swansea City, Burnley and West Ham United, and now faces another spell out just as the club and country schedule intensifies.

Wales’ Autumn Programme

Wales’ autumn programme offers little margin for error. They travel to face Portugal on 24 September to launch a four-game run in an extended international window. Bellamy’s side then head to Copenhagen to meet Denmark, before returning home to Cardiff, where World Cup quarter-finalists Norway arrive on 1 October. The window closes with a return meeting against the Danes on 4 October.

Broadhead will watch it all from the sidelines, just when he seemed poised to cement his place in Bellamy’s plans.
